“You said all I’d have to do was fill in as the bride. Admit it, you totally scammed me.”

“Scam? Come on, Easy. You know there are always variables in every mission.”

“Variables are one thing. But this? Seriously, put your hand on your heart and ask yourself. Don’t you think it’s a bit much to call it a ‘variable’? The guy who was supposed to die just waltzes back home alive?”

“Sorry.”

“Don’t just apologize. Come up with an actual solution! Haa… Please.”

If she stayed in that house, she’d eventually get pierced by that inhuman club of his. Daisy had to bite her tongue to keep from saying it out loud.

“For now… what if you just hold out and keep a close eye on the situation?”

“You’re calling that a plan right now?”

Anyone can say that. Daisy’s face turned red with anger at Count Therese’s irresponsible answer.

“I’m sorry. Can you just let it go, just this once? Honestly, no one saw this coming.”

That wasn’t a lie. No one had bet on Maxim von Waldeck pulling off a glorious victory.

When he’d left for the front, half the kingdom had sneered he’d just become another royal mutt sent as cannon fodder.

“If you could stick it out a little longer and gather intel from the inside, that would be perfect…”

“Sticking it out is already killing me! It’s like walking on thin ice. You called it an easy mission, but this is nothing like what you promised. Are you trying to set me up for disaster?”

“Come on, you know I care about you. I’d never do that.”

It sure looks like care.

Count Therese spoke back.

“I’m sorry, Easy. You’re good at this. Just hang in there a bit longer, okay? You know I trust you.”

“I don’t want to hear it.”

“You’ve already made it this far, so just a little more, for the cause. Please?”

Count Therese actually sounded like he was begging now.

What is this sly con artist doing? Daisy was shocked.

“If it’s so easy, you do it, Boss! You think it’s not hard?”

“What’s really the issue? Tell me honestly, so I can help.”

Fine, she thought, maybe if I spell it out, he’ll stop talking nonsense.

“…He keeps trying to touch me. He’s all over me every chance he gets.”

“What do you mean?”

Fine, might as well just spell it out, maybe then he’ll stop talking nonsense. Though it was awkward as hell, Daisy decided to lay out exactly what she was dealing with.

“…He keeps trying to….. get physical.”

“What do you mean?”

Of course, Count Therese had to make her say it twice. Daisy replied in exasperation.

“He keeps bringing up the wedding night every time he sees me. I’m honestly about to lose my mind! I can only dodge him for so long.”

“You mean you haven’t done it yet?”

“…What? What’s that supposed to mean?”

Was she supposed to have, already? Daisy looked at him, incredulous.

“You two seemed pretty close.”

“Absolutely not.”

“That guy looks at you like he’s completely smitten. Trust me, a guy can spot another man in a rut from a mile away.”

“Can you not joke about this right now?”

“Hmph. Look, a young man in his prime, of course he’s got a strong s*x drive. He even said you’re his type. That’s why I sent you in, to grant a dying man his last wish.”

“Why did you have to use me to grant his wish? What, are you trying to become a pimp now? I agreed to fill the bride’s role, not actually sleep with that pervert!”

Daisy just about exploded. The more she thought about it, the more obvious it was that this was a total scam.

She was so mad. Screw the money, maybe she ought to just kill the guy and be done with it.

In that moment, rage flared from deep inside her. Daisy’s grip tightened around the little dessert fork.

“Easy, please, just put down the fork. Didn’t you swear off killing people?”

Count Therese must’ve realized he was dangerously close to being the next target, because he tried to calm her down, eyes flickering to her hand.

Hold it. Hold it. Killing is off the table.

Reminding herself of her promise, Daisy gritted her teeth and set the fork down.

“Haa… You should really try living a good life for once, be grateful the Lord let you live this long.”

“I’ve got way too many sins for that, I’m already a lost cause. You’re no better, you know.”

“Stop with the nonsense. Why did you pick me for this mission in the first place? I want to hear it from you.”
