Battle Divorce! - Chapter 21
She’d heard it all before, back when she first got assigned to this mission. Yes, he was the royal bloodhound, but still technically on the royal family’s side so it was wise to have someone.
It was always some vague excuse.
But this time, Daisy wanted a real answer.
“Honestly, it was a position everyone avoided. I only put you there in case, by some chance, something like this happened.”
And today was just more proof of that. There was definitely something he wasn’t saying. There always was.
“So you did have some idea something like this might happen?”
“I said it was just in case. Just in case! But, come on, he’s handsome, isn’t he? You like good-looking guys.”
“Well… that’s true, I guess.”
She had to admit, at least he appreciated the looks.
He was all rugged masculinity but surprisingly well-groomed, the kind of man you’d call a finely bred stallion. Not the classiest way to put it, maybe, but he was the sort you wouldn’t mind to climb on.
But that was all instinct.
Daisy wasn’t like Maxim von Waldeck, who seemed to have s*x on the brain every second.
“His looks have nothing to do with the mission.”
She was a practical person, after all. She had orphans to feed, and she’d planned to retire soon. Getting tangled up in a complicated mission was the last thing she wanted.
“You know how it is, Easy. Other girls sometimes have to do far worse things, with guys way uglier than him.”
That wasn’t a lie. Operatives sent as mistresses rarely had the luxury of picking their targets by looks. Even if the guy was some fat, ugly old creep, they’d still have to get on your knees and suck.
Of course, not that Daisy ever had, or ever would.
“Well, if you have to, isn’t it better with a handsome guy than an ugly one?”
“……”
“You always said your dream was to live a normal life, even fall in love someday. Think of this as practice. You’ve already kissed him, right? It’s just a little more generosity, that’s all…”
“Why is it the Boss’ generosity we’re talking about here? It’s my body. Do you want to die?”
“Okay, okay, I’m sorry. I’ll come up with a solution. Just give me a little time, alright?”
Daisy glared, and Count There folded his hands together, pleading.
“If you’re just going to talk nonsense, I’d recommend you just keep your mouth shut.”
“Tsk. That mouth of yours. You never go easy on me, do you?”
“If you want respect, maybe try acting respectable for once.”
Tsk, she clicked her tongue in annoyance but held back from letting out the string of curses she wanted to unload.
“I haven’t just been sitting on my hands, you know. I worry about you all the time. Here.”
Count Therese handed her a file. It was information on Maxim von Waldeck.
“Shouldn’t you have given me this sooner?”
“Well, I didn’t expect the bastard to survive, and he barely lets anyone near him except his closest men. There wasn’t much information to find. Sorry about that.”
Excuses, always excuses.
Muttering under her breath, Daisy flipped through the file.
[Maxim von Waldeck, age 26]
[Illegitimate son of Princess Helene* and Sir Jayden Kleist**, nephew of the late former Grand Duke of Waldeck.
*acknowledged daughter of Konrad II, and younger sister of former Grand Duke Waldeck
**the Princess Helene’s knight escort.]
Daisy knew as much, roughly.
[Became notorious as a mercenary during the Western Continent’s barbarian uprisings. His earlier history is unknown.]
[After winning a major victory in a border war with Robeil, he caught the royal family’s eye and was admitted to the Royal Military Academy. He skipped grades, graduated top of his class, and entered the Central Order.]
[Promoted to commander of the royal special forces, decorated for his merit, and granted a special promotion.]
Daisy’s husband had quite the record.
[Famous for torturing enemy spies and prisoners to extract confessions.]
[All Robeil prisoners were summarily executed after confession.]
Goodness. If he ever found out who she really was, she’d be dead meat.
And this was the guy she was supposed to ‘just watch and wait’ around with no solutions?
Unbelievable.
The more Daisy read, the more her expression darkened.
