“The Korean branch of the Center operates a legal support team and a Guide Grievance Counseling Center. Support cases are categorized as follows…”

In a cozy classroom with about ten trainees seated, the others were listening to the lecture at their leisure, but Hyeji alone was diligently taking notes.

Even though she was on leave from university, her daily routine of studying hadn’t changed. Thanks to her diligent review, she ranked first in the written exam, and thanks to her part-time jobs, her physical fitness was among the best.

But what did it matter? She was at the bottom for practical skills.

For Guides, it’s not about brains or fitness. If you can guide, that’s all that matters.

These days, she was often reminded of the magic school novels she’d read as a child. She was no different from a character born of a wizard’s bloodline but unable to use magic. She found herself relating to those side characters’ sorrows, which she’d never cared about before.

Is this what it means to broaden your view of the world? She tried to see it positively.

“Contact guiding, when done by mutual consent, is legal even when compensation is involved, because it concerns the lives and safety of Espers and civilians, as well as national security. It is conducted under strict regulations and procedures, and is thoroughly supervised to ensure it never happens without the parties’ consent.”

The instructor carefully delved into a usually avoided topic, saying the Center’s support system was especially important for those interested in contact guiding.

“But even if the system is complete, incidents that violate the rules can still happen in the field. This isn’t unique to Espers and Guides. It can happen in any occupation or company. So…”

The instructor explained various response methods in considerable detail. At that point, Hyeji’s pen suddenly stopped. If she wrote this down, someone might think she was interested in contact guiding. She still hadn’t made up her mind, but she needed to be prepared for anything, so instead of writing, she committed the instructor’s words to memory.

“Espers’ required abilities change according to the international situation, so their demand fluctuates a lot. But since Guide abilities aren’t subdivided and there are fewer Guides than Espers, demand for Guides stays consistently high.”

That was something she had already noticed at the Center. Out of a total of twelve trainees, only three were Guides, and the other nine were all Espers.

“That’s why kidnapping by criminal or terrorist groups can occur, so be careful and keep it secret that you’re a Guide. Of course, Espers should be just as careful.”

When the lecture ended, the trainees flocked to the back of the dorm. Soon the smell of grilled pork belly began to fill the air. Sitting together around an outdoor table and clinking paper cups of soju, Hyeji thought this wasn’t much different from the university freshman retreat just a month before.

Drinks and meat, noise loud enough to hurt your ears, and even a vibe of people checking out who might start a fling.

Actually, there wasn’t much checking out. The ratio was 6:6, but since Espers obviously wouldn’t date other Espers, it became 1:4 and 1:5 in practice. There was one male and one female Guide available as potential love interests. Out of three Guides, only two were considered possible partners—because Hyeji was excluded.

I may be an F-Class ‘untouchable’ here, but on the other side I’m that rare S-Class! None of you are S, you know. But Hyeji, unable to shout that, just poured herself another soju, burning up inside.

“Whoa, whoa, a photo’s up!”

Guide Yeowoon, sitting next to her, suddenly shouted and thrust her phone toward Hyeji. On the screen was a young man she’d never seen before, glaring at her through a swirl of rising cigarette smoke.

Is this a photoshoot?

His bold, provocative gaze from beneath thick, perfectly shaped brows was extraordinary. His lips, slightly parted as if about to smoke, looked surprisingly sensual. And the balance and proportions of his eyes, nose, and mouth were flawless.

Not only was his face perfect. His long index and middle fingers, holding the cigarette, were strikingly elegant, with tendons visible just enough to be attractive. Beautiful hands.

There was nothing rough about him. His neatness was tinged with an odd decadence, perfectly fitting Hyeji’s tastes. Hyeji grabbed her phone, ready to follow him on social media, and asked,

“Is he an actor?”

“Hey, just check the café.”

Seeing the title ‘Yesterday’s Batch 91 Gathering Recap’, Hyeji made a sound like a rock breaking. No wonder there was so little information about Espers and Guides online. They had their own private forums. The Center had created this network, but everyone just called it the ‘café’.

“Who is it? An Esper?”

“Gosh, the name’s right under it.”

Hyeji made another rock-breaking noise as she looked beneath the photo.

[ Even Mr. Han Kanghyeon, whose face is said to require three generations of good karma just to see, has made an appearance. ]

Han Kanghyeon. The Esper Yeowoon had raved about for twenty days straight.

He was one of the world’s top two mental-type Espers, and at just twenty-six, he was said to be the head of a private military company with dozens of Espers, including ten S-Classes.

In short, a complete cheat character who had everything.
