Guidelines for the Perfect Goodbye - Chapter 42
âI, I wasâŚâ
As Hannah hesitated, Ulysses continued.
âAt that time, you made it seem as if you were protecting Cecilia because sheâs âyour masterâ.â
âYe-Yes, I was trying to cover for Lady CeciliaâŚ!â
âReally?â
He laughed briefly, a laugh as cold as ice.
âYou had already been dismissed by that time. So, wouldnât your relationship with Cecilia be terrible? Yet she asked you for a favor?â
âThatâsâŚ!â
âOn what grounds could she have possibly trusted you?â
Hannah realized.
No matter what she said, this man wouldnât believe her.
For some reason, he became so utterly infuriated just at the mention of Ceciliaâs name.
âYou are untrustworthy in many ways. Itâs clear that youâre an opportunistic wretch.â
Ulysses harshly criticized her. Beside him, Adam nodded as if in agreement.
âIndeed. If this maid tried to poison Nigel and frame you with the sachet, itâs possible she also tried to harm the Lasphilla heir before.â
âI, I didnât⌠I didnât do itâŚâ
âThatâs the reason behind your actions? Revenge? Did I ruin your family in the past?â
Adam had seen servants infiltrate his staff seeking revenge for their parents. He had many enemies, as he did not shy away from sin.
âAnd I just killed them all.â
He had often listened to their curses as they were caught. He didnât listen, simply executing them all.
âIâm not like thatâŚâ
âDenying your guilt even now?â
ââŚAh.â
Hannah finally knew. She was utterly cornered.
Her gaze naturally drifted to the person who had orchestrated everything that day.
âMadamâŚâ
“Let’s stop here…! Let’s stop right here!”
Guinevere, still on slumped on the ground, stood up went in front of Hannah.
“Since this maid is the culprit, let’s expel her and forget this dreadful event! I don’t want to see any more family strife!”
“Madam! Your promise!”
Unable to bear the injustice, Hannah cried out.
“Wasn’t it all at your command?!”
“Are you trying to pin the blame on someone else now!”
This foolish woman! If she had just shut up and left quietly, Guinevere would have taken care of everything.
But Hannah wasn’t in a position to consider the future. She was just too overwhelmed and wronged by the current situation.
So, she pleaded her case to Adam, Caroline, and Ulysses.
“I only did as Madam Rosencrantz told me!”
“You still haven’t come to your senses!”
“Wait a moment, Sister.”
Adam pushed Guinevere aside and stood in front. Guinevere’s eyes widened in shock.
Did my younger brother just push me aside?
…Me?
He, who owes everything and Lasphilla to me! How dare he!
Tears streamed down her face, but Adam paid no attention. He asked Hannah.
“What exactly did my sister ask you to do?”
“She asked me to… towards Young Master Nathan…”
“Donât listen to her, Adam! It’s all a big lie!”
“Ah! Madam, donât pull me! It hurts!”
“Donât speak! Do not speaaaaak!”
“Butler, take my sister to her room.”
With one command from Adam, Guinevere was dragged away, followed by Caroline. Now, only Adam, Ulysses, and the two maids remained.
Adam asked again.
“Did you say Nathan? Continue.”
“Yes, y-yes. So…”
As Hannah hesitated, Ulysses quickly interjected.
“With the crimes revealed so far, you’re already to be sentenced with execution. But if you confess honestly, I can write a petition on your behalf.”
The mention of execution turned Hannah’s face from pale to ashen.
Left with no choice, she continued.
“Madam Rosencrantz told me, to, to do something in return…”
Hannah should have ignored that offer. She should have pretended not to hear. Better yet, she should have never coveted the position of serving her. Now, everything was water under the bridge.
If she was going down, she wouldnât go alone.
Swallowing her tears, Hannah continued.
“Itâs only because I wanted to get my position back. The Madam said she would talk to you, Master, if I helped her.”
“Was her request to harm Nathan?”
Hannah slowly nodded.
“Madam Rosencrantz instructed me to put poison in Mary Swinnâs lotion, the nanny of Young Master Nathan.”
“What! You crazy littleâŚ! You did what to my lotion?! âŚMmphâ”
Mary involuntarily let out a shriek and quickly covered her mouth.
Adam glanced at Mary sharply, then turned and asked.
“What kind of poison?”
