Holy Night: My Husband is Definitely a Paladin - Chapter 149
“Irene is sleeping. Do not disturb her further.”
At his whisper, the tendril bobbed its tip, as if it understood his words.
If Irene had been awake, she would have doubted her eyes, then likely reacted in shock.
For a human and monster to communicate—it was unheard of.
Since dungeons had first appeared, no one had ever been able to accomplish such a thing.
But Michael spoke to the monster again.
“Did this distortion dungeon form early because of me?”
A nod.
The tendril moved in a way that seemed to convey a response.
At this, Michael suppressed a sigh.
Gently, he lifted Irene’s head to free his arm, replacing it with some bunched-up clothing for her to rest on.
However, it seemed she noticed the absence of his arm, as Irene, who had been peacefully asleep, furrowed her brow and began to stir.
“Goodness.”
With a pleasant smile, he gathered her back into his arms and leaned against the wall, holding her close.
He half-expected her to open her eyes, but instead, she only murmured softly a few times before falling back into a deep sleep.
As if his embrace was the most comfortable place for her to rest.
Meanwhile, the tendril began to inch closer again.
Though it seemed too afraid to approach him, it clearly wanted to get closer to Irene, nestled in his arms.
At that moment, something began floating gently toward them.
It was the monster that had massacred Princess Cecilia’s raid.
With the others present, Michael had defeated it instantly.
But now, he barely spared it a glance, as if it was beneath his concern.
The monster, in turn, seemed to accept Michael’s indifference, circling him aimlessly without making any move.
As time passed, more monsters gathered around him.
They all shared a common gesture.
They bowed their heads to Michael.
It was the posture of vassals paying homage to their king.
Michael glanced at the gathered monsters and spoke in a low voice.
“If you intend to serve me, you must also show respect to my companion.”
At his words, each monster lowered what could be considered its head.
“Go back.”
Upon Michael’s command, the monsters, satisfied by his acknowledgement, quietly disappeared.
In the now-quiet dungeon, Michael buried his face in the crook of Irene’s neck as she lay in his arms.
Though they had wandered through the dungeon and washed in the lake, her scent was still sweet enough to make him dizzy.
Inhaling deeply, Michael buried his face in the familiar fragrance, exactly as it had been in his previous life.
Even as he held her, it was hard to believe Irene was truly alive.
‘I just spent too long without her.’
He lifted his head to look at Irene’s peacefully sleeping face.
She was now living her second life.
But he…
Michael reached into the air, and the space before him seemed to waver before a piece of black metal appeared.
If Irene were awake, she would have been startled.
It was identical to the piece of metal she had obtained in the reward room just before she died.
Michael opened his palm, and the metal fragment fell into his hand.
Even holding it, there was no reaction.
‘As expected.’
He gazed at the fragment, knowing it was far more than a simple piece of metal.
Of all the artifacts brought forth by dungeons, this one had the most stringent requirements for its power to manifest.
He recalled the abilities and activation conditions of this artifact, noted long ago by the hands of appraisers.
Its ability was to turn back time.
And the activation condition…
‘The death of all monsters.’
A condition almost impossible to achieve.
But he had done it.
The proof was now resting, fast asleep, in his arms.
“Irene.”
Michael murmured, burying his face in her hair.
“This better not be a dream.”
It had to be real.
It must.
If this was merely a dream, if he woke up to find her gone from his arms…
He would begin killing everything around him, monster or human alike.
As he had done before, countless of times.
Again now.
