ā€œThe tentacle… it seemed like it protected me… cough!ā€

Irene tried to answer slowly, but a sudden cough interrupted her.

Seeing her struggle, Michael hastily shook his head.

ā€œDon’t speak. You mustn’t strain yourself.ā€

Michael looked at Irene as if she were the most fragile patient in the world, clearly unsure what to do.

Reyna, who had been watching, was taken aback.

She had always seen Michael composed and unshaken, even in the horrific scenes of the dungeon where lives were being lost left and right.

Yet here he was, panicking over Irene’s mild cough.

It was clear he must have spoken to the doctor before entering the room and already knew that Irene’s condition wasn’t life-threatening, with only mild paralysis lingering.

Despite this, every small sound she made seemed to wrench his heart.

Reyna quickly realized what she needed to do.

ā€œI’ll go get some tea!ā€

Her plan? To leave them alone together.

ā€˜Lately, whenever I’m around those two, I feel like I’m intruding on something.’

Reyna dashed out of the room, recalling the recent times she had instinctively stepped aside whenever Irene and Michael were together.

She hadn’t left because she was uncomfortable—she had simply felt, on some primal level, that the two would feel more at ease talking without her there.

When she shared this with Cynthia, her friend had praised her for being considerate, telling her not to interrupt their conversations.

ā€˜Oh my, oh my, oh my.’

After seeing Michael’s behavior today, Reyna finally realized the truth. Irene and Michael were far closer than she had ever imagined.

ā€œThank you.ā€

As Reyna closed the door, Michael caught her eye and smiled, speaking briefly in his usual calm tone.

Something about his demeanor made Reyna decide she should spend as much time as possible outside the room before returning.

ā€˜No, wait. Maybe I should take a walk with Felix before going back.’

That would buy plenty of time.

Coincidentally, Felix had just returned from his training downstairs.

ā€œFelix!ā€

Reyna waved enthusiastically and ran to him. Felix beamed and wrapped her in his arms.

It had been three months since the two entered the fortress and experienced both large and small challenges together.

They had saved more money and gained more experience than they’d ever expected, deepening their trust and understanding of one another along the way.

ā€˜The best part is proving my family’s warnings wrong.’

Before they joined the fortress, Reyna had spent her days crying as her family opposed their relationship.

They hadn’t stopped at mere disapproval—they had cruelly predicted that Felix, being too weak, would be the first to die if they entered the fortress together.

Reyna knew there was some truth to their words.

Many renowned knights from various kingdoms had sought her as a pair, after all.

Still, she had chosen love.

They didn’t have to join the fortress—they could have simply run away to live a quiet life in the countryside as ordinary people, abandoning their roles as purifier and knight.

She had braced herself for the first year to be grueling, but contrary to her expectations, they had made friends in the fortress, and Felix was growing stronger under Michael’s guidance.

Reyna knew exactly when things had started to turn around for them.

ā€˜It was after we met Irene.’

Before meeting her, they had floundered, unsure of what to do, constantly making mistakes.

But after Irene had firmly advised them not to enter a certain dungeon, things had begun falling into place.
