Suppressing the questions swirling in his mind and mouth, Kagan focused, narrowing his eyes.

No matter how much he thought about it, something wasn’t right.

‘This isn’t normal.’

He took a deep breath, trying to control his rising agitation.

He didn’t want to lose his temper.

“And that night, while she was suffering… the princess died.”

“…What?”

“I saw it. I was there when she passed. I was holding her as her body went cold, crying my eyes out… but nothing changed.”

Mary said softly, brushing her hand across Nisha’s cheek before turning to meet Kagan’s eyes.

When Mary saw the faint red glow flickering in his golden eyes, she felt oddly relieved.

At least this man was truly angry for the princess’s sake.

“The doctors couldn’t do anything, and I couldn’t either. I just sat there, helpless, sobbing.”

“…….”

“But then, at midnight, a white light surrounded her body.”

Kagan’s eyes widened slightly at that.

It was the same light he had seen so many times before.

“And before long, the princess opened her eyes again. The bleeding had stopped, and her wounds had healed, as if none of it had ever happened.”

Mary added quietly, still haunted by the vivid memory.

A little savior who had died and returned.

To be so utterly helpless, holding someone as they died, crying like a child with no way to save them.

To live in a place like the imperial palace, where everything could turn into an enemy, meant a slow, isolated death.

Nisha had nearly faced such a death.

No, she had faced it once.

But she came back to life.

“At midnight, she started breathing again. Her chest rose and fell, her body grew warm, and then she opened her eyes.”

“…….”

“And every time after she woke, she seemed thirsty, so I always prepared water in advance.”

Kagan couldn’t make sense of it.

Why had she died, and why had she come back? None of this added up.

“So… right now.”

Kagan muttered, his face twisting in frustration.

“She was dead?”

“Yes.”

Mary confirmed with a nod.

The raw emotion in her eyes, anger, frustration, and sorrow, was unmistakable, and Kagan quickly realized she wasn’t lying.

“She died…”

“Yes. And when the princess opened her eyes, she said…”

Mary’s face crumpled, as if on the verge of tears.

“She said she finally understood how to recharge and use her powers.”

“…….”

“That means…”

“I’ve heard that the princess’s power, the life force that revives people, is replenished every time she dies.”

Mary shut her eyes tightly, as if hating her own helplessness, but she didn’t stop speaking.

Unlike her, this man had the power to do something.

He might be able to return the princess’s strange and twisted life back to its original path.

She hoped—no, she wanted him to do it.

“The longer she stays dead, the stronger and longer she can use her powers. But while I was with her, there were too many eyes watching. The empress or the crown prince would often visit, so she couldn’t stay dead for long.”

The problem started when she began to be respected here.

If that respect had led to better outcomes, it would have been fine, but instead, no one dared to approach her room out of respect.

Naturally.

This man before her had given strict orders, almost like a warning.

Unlike Nisha, who was detached from the staff, Mary could see how deeply rooted the fear of Kagan Xieman was.

People might gossip lightly about the Kagan, but no one dared defy him.

Even if his command was to dunk their heads in water, they’d follow it immediately.

Mary knew that even now, Kagan was being more lenient with her than she deserved.

After all, she was the princess’s only trusted maid.

“So, you’re saying that everything that’s happened until now… all of it was because she died and created it?”

Mary nodded lightly, and just as she raised her head again, she saw the eyes of a predator staring back at her.
