I Became a Barbarian's Bride - Chapter 116
“Are you thirsty?”
“Oh, no. I’m fine.”
She still didn’t have enough strength in her fingers to hold something securely.
“I’ll help you drink. I have something to talk about, too.”
He quietly poured water into a glass and brought it to her lips as he spoke.
Watching her awkwardly try to raise her hand, Kagan slowly shook his head.
As he looked at her clear eyes, the only things he could see were faint confusion and calm, making him lose his words again.
He tilted the glass to her lips, and she drank it down without hesitation.
Without a word, he poured another glass, helping her drink it as well, while checking her complexion.
She was pale.
He had thought she looked pale before, but now, without a hint of color, her face seemed even more bloodless.
While she had looked ghostly white while dead, now she seemed slightly better.
Perhaps the warm water had eased her throat, as her expression relaxed, and a faint smile appeared on her lips.
“It’s a good night.”
Nisha said calmly, her tone nonchalant.
Kagan twisted his lips slightly in response.
Instead of answering, he pulled a chair up to sit in front of her.
Sensing the tense atmosphere around him, a slight trace of concern passed through Nisha’s eyes.
“Princess.”
“Yes…”
At his low call, Nisha’s voice returned, tense and nervous.
Kagan tried to curl his lips into a smile, not wanting to scare her, but quickly realized he couldn’t manage it, letting out a dry laugh instead.
At the sound, Nisha’s shoulders shook even more.
“I… I just want to hear the truth. So, it would be nice if you didn’t lie.”
Kagan knew his own temperament well.
He wasn’t the type to hit or throw punches when angry, but he also couldn’t bottle up or suppress the things he wanted to say.
And he knew that his straightforward approach wasn’t well-suited to Nisha.
Still, this was something that needed to be addressed properly.
“What…?”
“The price of your ability, Princess, it’s not just sleeping, is it?”
At his words, Nisha’s shoulders stiffened sharply.
Her eyes widened for a moment, then she pressed her lips together and nervously rolled her eyes.
It was almost as if he could hear the wheels spinning in her head.
Kagan held back his rising frustration, forcing a faint smile to his lips.
“I want to hear the truth, directly from you, Princess.”
“…Kagan?”
“Yes. Speak honestly.”
Nisha stared blankly at him before offering an awkward smile.
“I… I’m not sure what you mean. It’s just sleep. When I wake up, my body is a bit stiff, but…”
“…….”
With an awkward smile, Nisha scratched her cheek, her expression genuinely filled with confusion and bewilderment, like someone who truly knew nothing.
If Kagan hadn’t already confirmed everything through Mary, the maid, he might have just brushed it off, unsure.
He rubbed his face silently.
“I actually came a little early today.”
Nisha hesitated for a moment, then slowly nodded.
“Yes…”
“But you were dead.”
Even he could tell that the words came out cold, hard, almost freezing.
Nisha remained silent, observing him closely.
She slightly lowered her head and rolled her eyes, gauging his expression and studying the slightest movement of his facial muscles.
It made him wonder how he hadn’t noticed earlier just how intently she scrutinized him.
Kagan silently watched her, realizing that if someone wasn’t quick to notice, they might easily overlook her sharp observation, disguised by her flitting gaze.
His clasped hands tightened, making a loud, creaking sound.
Nisha, sensing his growing frustration, stayed quiet, not offering any words of defense.
Her behavior was highly guarded, and Kagan exhaled slowly.
“Why did you do it?”
He could have asked in a more gentle way, there were plenty of options, but in the end, he couldn’t hold back and blurted out the question.
