Isn’t timing the most crucial aspect of life?

That was my belief.

The sky was intensely blue. The early summer sun was refreshing yet hot enough to warm the heart.

At the onset of that summer, what stood out most vividly before me was the man standing there.

“Thank you for coming.”

He chuckled at my words and stepped forward to stand in front of me.

How tall could he be? Tall enough to make my neck hurt, possibly over 190cm?

Looking up, I couldn’t find a single flaw in his face. From below, the harmony of his high nose bridge and beautiful nose was even more pronounced.

As the wind blew, his jet-black hair fluttered softly.

The fresh scent from the nearby forest mingled with his body scent and tickled my heart.

The smell of sun-dried, cozy fabric soaked my heart, making it impossible to look away from him.

Even when standing against the light, his jet-black hair fluttered. It was pitch black, like a dark abyss where no single color could be isolated.

“Why did you call me here?”

Each time our eyes met, my body involuntarily tensed up. His blood-red eyes sparkled like jewels but were often startlingly bright.

Perhaps that’s why, even when I closed my eyes, the afterimage remained, making it hard to stare for long.

But today, it seemed I shouldn’t close my eyes.

“I called you because there’s something I want to tell you.”

He stood just a step away, close enough to reach by walking forward.

As he looked down and smiled, words spilled out of me without thinking.

“I like you.”

That was my first confession.

The first of many confessions I had to make to him.

“I’m serious.”

He frowned in response.

“I have someone else I like.”

“Yeah, I know.”

I looked straight at him as he scratched the back of his neck with a bewildered expression.

“I’m a guy too. And so are you.”

“I know that. I just wanted to say it.”

Knowing he would reject me somehow made my heart feel lighter.

“Can we still be friends?”

He frowned and then sighed before answering.

“Huh.”

I smiled wistfully in relief.

I knew things wouldn’t go as originally hoped because I was turned down.

Foolishly so.
