“But….Is what you just said not true? You just said that out of anger, right? You didn’t… actually get involved with His Highness while we weren’t around, did you?”

Baroness Thierry looked at Illein with a piercing gaze, as if trying to burn through her with her eyes.

“…No.”

Illein couldn’t muster the defiance to answer back this time, given the intense pressure from her mother.

“See? If only you had answered honestly from the start, it would have been so much better.”

Finally, the Baroness relaxed her tense expression and nodded.

“After all, if the First Prince had any sense, he wouldn’t even think of touching you.”

Marriage was a significant strategic tool for royalty.

“For the sake of your future, it’s only right for the First Prince to form connections with a powerful family. But you must be careful. You wouldn’t want to find yourself in a scandal!”

The Baroness thought it would be best to eliminate any sources of anxiety.

“Illein, now that we’re on the subject, how about quitting the academy?”

She couldn’t understand why Illein was so fixated on such an institution. To the Baroness, her daughter’s determination seemed utterly foolish.

“I think it would be better to get married quickly. No matter who you marry, you won’t find a better match than the Wignum Marquisate.”

Illein felt a wave of suffocation wash over her. This was too much.

A surge of anger welled up in her chest. She struggled to contain it, but it was impossible.

Still, she bit her lip, trying her best to suppress the rising fury within her.

She feared that if she spoke, she would say something unforgivable. But it took only a moment for all her efforts to crumble.

It was triggered by one careless remark from Baron Thierry.

“Exactly! Your mother is right! Just do it! You can’t even conduct yourself properly, and you want to stay at the academy? Look at you! Bringing a man into the house like this! If I had known you would behave like this, I would have forced you into a marriage with Melias the moment the engagement was mentioned!”

It was a vicious insult.

The words showed a complete lack of respect for Illein’s dignity.

“Stop! Stop! Please, just stop!”

Illein unleashed the anger she had been holding back. Her voice echoed in a desperate scream.

“Just what do Father and Mother think of me? Why are you doing this to me?”

“What? What are you saying?”

Fueled by rage, Illein glared with wide eyes.

“Does Father and Mother see me as a person? Or as some kind of object? What you’re doing right now makes it seem like you’re trying to sell me off like some mare! Isn’t that right?”

Baron Thierry looked utterly incredulous, as if he couldn’t believe the words he was hearing. The Baroness, on the other hand, contorted her face with anger that she struggled to contain.

— Smack, smack! Smack!

Illein’s words had struck a nerve with Baroness Thierry.

“What? A mare? You really have no shame, do you? I also started with a political marriage! What’s the problem? Why are you the only one with so many complaints?”

As Illein’s words seemed to deny her entire life, Baroness Thierry yelled loudly. Without hesitation, she slapped Illein’s face multiple times.

“How many times have I supported you! How many times have I helped you when you acted recklessly?”

Baroness Thierry continued to shout.

“When did you help me? You’ve always tried to control me. Was I wrong to say that? Am I less valuable than a mare for you to carry on the bloodline?”

With tears streaming down her face, Illein looked at both her parents with resentment in her eyes.

“Can’t you just shut up?”

“Why should I? I’ve kept quiet every time! But do you two really consider me your child? You’ve never asked for my opinion!”

Her sorrow-filled voice began to crack.

“Ha! Why would I need to ask that?”

Baron Thierry genuinely didn’t understand why Illein was acting this way. To him, it was incomprehensible.

“Really, Illein! How can you be so selfish! Aren’t you grateful that we provide for you and take care of you?”

Illein felt a wave of despair wash over her again. She hadn’t expected them to listen to her in the first place, but she hadn’t anticipated this level of resistance.

When would she ever break free from this endless cycle?

No matter how much she fought or tried to persuade them, it felt useless—like talking to thin air.

“I just… want to be happy. I’m trying to do well by you, Mother and Father. But I don’t know if that path has to be marriage.”

As she spoke, a light of resignation flickered in Illein’s eyes. Yet, no one seemed to care about her plight.

“Illein!”

Baroness Thierry shouted even louder, as if she couldn’t bear to hear her next words.

“I don’t even know if I like Melias! How can I get married when Melias doesn’t love me either!”
