I Just Wanted to Avoid Death - Chapter 84
His face was so pale it was a miracle he hadn’t passed out already.
Yeshion bit down hard on his lip and took hold of Rosaline’s arm.
If he wished for it desperately enough, it would come true.
If what had happened just now wasn’t a miracle but proof that he truly had divine power—
Then he wanted to pray.
To the god of this world, whoever they were—
Let them hear his plea.
“…Don’t die.”
He wished Rosaline wouldn’t die.
It didn’t matter if Eldis wasn’t the one to save him. Even if this twisted the original plot, it didn’t matter.
Right now, he just didn’t want Rosaline to be in pain. He didn’t want him to die.
‘Please…’
The moment that thought landed, it felt like being struck in the head—his vision flickered in and out as nausea surged and the world turned white.
“…Ye…shion?”
Rosaline’s startled voice echoed, but when he tried to look toward it, he couldn’t see anything. It felt as if he were trapped in light.
Was this… not working?
Maybe saving someone, healing them—it was too much to expect from someone like him?
He could escape danger, sure, but to save someone else—had he wanted too much?
“Urgh…!”
Then it hit.
His entire body ached like he’d been beaten, and the nausea intensified to the point where he couldn’t hold back the urge to vomit.
Suddenly, all strength drained from his limbs, and Yeshion collapsed sideways to the ground.
“Yeshion!”
Rosaline’s voice sounded far away, as if through a dream.
He couldn’t pass out. He needed to get Rosaline back to the camp.
But Yeshion lost consciousness almost instantly.
* * *
He had a dream.
In it, the real “Yeshion” appeared with an annoyed expression and spat out, “You pathetic brat.”
He’d expected him to show up with a terrifying face, demanding his body back. But the Yeshion in the dream looked smug, bored with the world.
“Why did you live doing such awful things?”
Yeshion stared at that face, then asked the question he’d always wanted to ask.
The real Yeshion let out a short laugh.
“Because it pissed me off.”
“…What?”
“Everyone else being happy, everyone except me, pissed me off.”
His face twisted without meaning to.
“What the hell did you even do?”
“Don’t remember.”
“Hey!”
When he raised his voice as if to accuse him, the real “Yeshion” lazily waved his hand like he couldn’t be bothered.
Then, locking eyes with him, he said,
“If you fix everything I screwed up, I’ll give you this body.”
“…What?”
“Just live like it’s your life. I’ve got no attachments anymore.”
Something about his drowsy tone felt too real to be just a dream.
Yeshion parted his lips to ask more, but the real Yeshion shook his head.
As if to say there was no point—he wouldn’t answer anything anyway.
“Now go. Don’t make a fuss. I want to be alone.”
As soon as he said it, Yeshion’s eyes snapped open.
He stared up at the ceiling for a long moment. He’d dreamt something, he was sure, but the details were already slipping away.
Blinking blankly, he saw the fabric ceiling of the tent—still unfamiliar.
As the sense of reality returned, Yeshion sat bolt upright. His head throbbed like it was about to split, but that didn’t matter now.
“Ro… Rosaline, where’s Rosaline…!”
His voice cracked with panic. Just then, the tent flap opened and Rosaline burst in.
“Yeshion! You’re awake, Yeshion’s awake!”
Rosaline flung himself into Yeshion’s arms as if leaping, clutching him tight and shouting,
“Why did you do that, you idiot!”
Again and again, he sobbed as he yelled.
“Are you okay? Saintess, are you really okay? Are you hurt anywhere?”
“Huhuhuh… I’m fine! I’m fine, you healed me, didn’t you!”
Seeing him crying like a child, Yeshion unknowingly let out a breath of relief.
None of it felt real.
It was surreal, and his emotions were tangled—but more than anything, he felt relief that Rosaline was alive.
“I’m sure I taught you how to control divine power.”
While he was still comforting Rosaline, a low voice came from the entrance of the tent.
Yeshion looked up to see Eldis standing there, arms crossed, wearing a thoroughly displeased expression.
He looked ready to scold him on the spot.
“…How to control divine power?”
“I told you during class. Though you never listened, insisting you didn’t have divine power.”
Eldis walked up to him, took a deep breath, then exhaled with a sigh.
“…Still, I won’t nag you about it this time.”
Reaching out, Eldis gently stroked Yeshion’s cheek. Then, with a small smile, he said,
“Thank you for coming back safe.”
It made something in Yeshion’s chest quietly stir.
