I Wish You Well In Your Next Love, My Love - Chapter 33
Could it be that his memory had returned, and he was pretending not to know?
I carefully studied Gerard’s expression. But even Gerard himself seemed unable to understand what he had just done, and he stood there stiffly.
“…Ah, was I craving onions for some reason?”
He said something so pointless.
On Gerard’s plate, there was now a pile of onions enough for two people.
“It’s fine, eat a lot.”
I forced myself to act normal and took a bite of risotto first.
‘…I really need to be careful.’
They say that once you learn how to ride a bicycle, you never forget it until you die. The memory of the body was that frightening.
For a while, no words were exchanged, only the sound of utensils clinking.
“Do you happen to dislike onions?”
At the sudden voice, my hand paused.
“…Why?”
“Why did I think you couldn’t eat onions?”
Gerard seemed still unable to shake his confusion, replaying his earlier action.
“I eat them whenever I can get them. You must’ve mistaken me for someone else.”
“There’s no one I could mistake you for.”
“Now that I think about it, I feel like Arvina once said she couldn’t eat onions.”
“……”
“I chew them like apples. Maybe you got confused.”
I had never eaten with Arvina, so I didn’t actually know whether she had any food dislikes.
I felt sorry to use her as an excuse, but I couldn’t think of any better way to smooth over this sudden situation.
“Did I used to pick food apart like this for her too?”
“……”
“Looks like Arvina and I were closer than I thought.”
I barely swallowed the food in my mouth and answered, “Yes.” I had hardly eaten anything, yet my stomach already felt heavy.
It wasn’t exactly comfortable for me either, continuing to deceive Gerard while he looked troubled.
‘I should just finish quickly and get up first.’
If it were up to me, I would abandon the meal altogether and bury myself under the blankets.
But if I stood up after only a few bites, it would be the same as announcing that I was conscious of Gerard.
To speed things up, I scooped a large spoonful of risotto.
I could feel his persistent gaze from across the table, but I stubbornly refused to look up.
Just before taking a big bite.
Tap.
Something black fell onto the spoon.
Flutter, flutter. Its oval body split its dark brown wings to either side and began scrambling wildly through the white risotto.
When its whisker-like antennae pointed straight at my face, a chilling shudder ran from the tips of my toes to the crown of my head.
“Kyaaah!”
Without thinking, I threw the spoon I was holding. My body jerked violently, and I kicked the table.
Crash!
The plate fell to the floor, scattering risotto over my clothes and everywhere around me, and the chair tipped backward.
‘Ah, I’m falling!’
Just as I squeezed my eyes shut, something unseen grabbed me and lifted my body up.
“Are you okay?”
Just before I fell, Gerard had used his ability.
“A b-bug! A cockroach!”
“Stop thrashing. You’ll get hurt.”
Gerard rushed over and lowered me carefully to the floor. I quickly moved behind him, using his body like a shield, and scanned the area with tense eyes.
I was so terrified of bugs that it felt like I must have died from an insect bite in a past life. No, simply saying I was afraid wasn’t enough.
My vision went dizzy, and my spine spasmed with an intense sense of rejection.
The fear was so overwhelming that I almost felt like abandoning the house and sleeping outside in the rainy alley.
“There! Over there!”
“Where?”
“On the wall next to the window!”
Grabbing the hem of his clothes tightly, I turned my body toward the wall where the cockroach was.
The highly intelligent arthropod had been climbing energetically up the wall, but the moment our eyes met, it froze as if it were a decorative ornament.
The thought that I had almost put the cockroach into my mouth along with the risotto just moments ago made my stomach churn.
