I couldn’t look at it any longer and pushed Gerard’s back hard toward the bug.

“Please, please catch it quickly!”

Unlike me, who was urging him while stomping my feet, Gerard calmly looked around.

He picked up a napkin that had fallen to the floor along with the risotto plate.

Gerard slowly approached the thing. Holding my breath, I stared only at his broad back.

Thud.

With a single motion, Gerard captured the cockroach alive. I, who had been hiding behind him, quickly ran to the window and opened it.

Rain blew inside, but this wasn’t the time to worry about something that trivial.

“Throw it outside!”

“……”

“Gerar— Lord Castion!”

At my urgent cry, Gerard only turned his head to look at me.

“……”

“Don’t look at me, just throw it!”

“……”

“Throw it out—”

Wait, what is this…

A bad sense of déjà vu hit me.

That face. It looked expressionless at first glance, but the twitch at the corner of his lips that he couldn’t quite hide, the eyes shining as if he had found prey.

Even though it had been three years since we broke up, it was a face I remembered clearly.

The face he made when he was about to tease me!

Sensing danger, I slowly backed away. Then I quickly turned and ran into the bedroom.

The moment I crossed the doorway, my waist was grabbed. With my legs lifted off the ground, I struggled wildly and shouted.

“Ah, let go! Don’t do it!”

I could feel him laughing quietly behind my back.

“What’s so scary? Take a closer look.”

“No! Get it away, ahh!”

I struggled and ended up falling face-first onto the bed. I slipped free when his grip loosened and fled to the edge of the bed, but that only trapped me.

Blocking my way, he raised the napkin with a wicked smile.

“You can’t just avoid your fears. You have to overcome them.”

“I can’t! This is something I’ll never overcome!”

“Look. You’re several times bigger than it.”

“I’ve already lost in spirit. I already lost!”

When I turned my head so hard my neck went stiff, Gerard burst out laughing.

“Alright, alright. I’ll stop. Come here. You’re about to become one with the wall.”

Gerard took my wrist and lightly pulled me toward him. A whimper escaped my lips. My body sagged toward him, and at that moment.

Wait.

My body froze stiff. The hand holding the napkin looked far too loose.

When I froze, forgetting even how to breathe, Gerard sensed something strange and checked the napkin.

“Oh.”

Realizing something was very wrong, he opened his hand. Inside was only a pure white napkin. The thing that should have been there was gone.

The moment I understood, goosebumps spread up my arm.

Flap.

The plump dark-brown thing flew up from my thigh, brushed past the tip of my nose, and shot upward.

I fainted on the spot.

* * *

Thunder roared loudly across the sky.

Even though it was long past bedtime, I sat curled up in one corner of the bed with my eyes wide open.

“Hic… sniff…”

I had cried so much that not only my eyes, but my whole face felt swollen.

“Um, I didn’t think it would escape.”

A cautious voice came from right beside me. I turned my eyes to glare resentfully at Gerard, and he flinched.

I took the handkerchief he quietly offered and placed it over my eyes. The soft fabric quickly grew damp.

“I cleaned everything outside.”

“……”

“You’ll have to buy a new plate. Charge it to me.”

“You ran away from home without a single coin, remember.”

“Then shouldn’t I get a few years knocked off my age to match the memories I lost?”

“I’ve never heard of that kind of calculation.”

“You’re hearing it now.”

He really couldn’t let a single remark go.

I brushed the handkerchief away with an irritated motion. But the irritation that had risen scattered in an instant.

“……”

His face was far too close.

My eyes, which had lost their composure, blinked without my control. The tears that had been hanging precariously at the tips of my lashes fell one by one down my cheeks.

“You still have tears left to cry?”

…Isn’t this too close.

Close enough that if I moved my head even slightly, our noses would brush.
