It Seems Like The Infamous Trash Can is Right Here! - Chapter 114
Within the Empire, House Luanax could have posed a threat to the Imperial Family. Yet from a broader continental perspective, there was no stronger ally than Lionel.
Thanks to Lionel, who fearlessly led his knights across the continent, the kingdoms subjugated by the Empire kept their heads low and swore loyalty more fervently than ever.
“…Thus, the issue of the magic crystal mine will likely be resolved smoothly.”
“That’s reassuring. You’ve done exceptionally well.”
The awkward atmosphere caused by our marriage issue had suddenly turned impossibly harmonious.
However, sitting across from Axion, I was still on high alert.
Lionel’s successes of strengthening the Empire’s treasury and gradually expanding territory were undoubtedly a source of discomfort to Axion.
Even though I’d only known Axion through a novel until now, his feelings were oddly transparent to me, as if I’d known him for a very long time.
When the conversation settled into an exchange of mutual benefit, Axion spoke with a smiling face.
“Your Majesty, since it appears you have much to discuss with Duke Luanax, why not invite him to dinner? While you continue your conversation, I’ll take Lady Dilottete for a walk through the central gardens.”
“Hmm? That sounds like a good idea. What do you think, Duke?”
“It’s a great honor, but unfortunately, I already have a prior engagement.”
“An invitation to the Imperial Banquet would be especially meaningful for Lady Dilottete, Duke. Unless it’s urgent, perhaps you could—”
As if perfectly timed, a servant approached cautiously, whispering a message to the Emperor just as Axion was addressing Lionel.
Though his voice was barely audible, the silence around us allowed me to hear the servant’s words clearly.
Apparently, Halid Calitas was waiting outside.
Axion asked the Emperor with a puzzled expression.
“Did you have an appointment, Your Majesty?”
“No, it seems he’s not here for me.”
“Oh, it must be because of me.”
Lionel deliberately wore a troubled expression.
“He was supposed to visit my mansion, but it appears he grew impatient…”
I was equally dumbfounded.
The conversation had indeed dragged on, but was he really so impatient as to follow us all the way to the Imperial Palace?
Or perhaps…
“The former Duke Calitas was the same, and it seems this one has inherited his fiery temperament.”
The Emperor laughed softly, shaking his head.
“Then let’s postpone the banquet invitation until next time.”
“Thank you for your understanding, Your Majesty.”
Both men, excluding Axion, seemed quite pleased.
All Lionel’s achievements would be recorded as part of the current Emperor’s reign, completely unrelated to Crown Prince Axion’s merits.
Given their closeness in age, it was inevitable Axion would be compared to Lionel.
“It’s a shame, but there’s nothing to be done. Allow me to escort Duke Luanax, Your Majesty.”
At Axion’s words, the Emperor nodded graciously. I wished they’d both hurry and leave together instead of this pointless escort.
“It was nice seeing you. Until next time.”
Before ending the audience, the Emperor offered me a farewell as well. I bowed respectfully, determined not to give him any reason for complaint.
Aside from the Emperor, no one could unilaterally command Lionel. Even Crown Prince Axion had to maintain mutual respect with heads of powerful noble families that supported the empire.
Someone as influential and wealthy as Lionel openly withdrawing support from Axion could easily threaten his position as Crown Prince.
It might have been different if there were only one heir to the throne, but there were three princes in total.
So, for now, it seemed we’d overcome one critical hurdle.
