“Now you’re perfect.”

“Is that so?”

Lionel smiled gently at Serenia, who spoke with obvious satisfaction, then reached beneath the seat and pulled out a sizable box.

Inside were a longsword, daggers, throwing weapons, and a bundle of magical scrolls.

After attaching a leather holder to his belt, he sheathed the longsword at his waist and secured five throwing daggers inside his jacket.

The formal attire Lionel wore when entering the palace was always enchanted, easily handling this much weight. They had been specifically designed for situations like this in the first place.

He predicted it was Solen with more than ninety percent certainty, but he had to be prepared for other possibilities. Lionel typically armed himself like this whenever he went outside anyway. It was only today, due to the scheduled audience with the Emperor, that he had traveled more lightly.

As Lionel finished packing even the magical scrolls, Serenia grabbed his sleeve and asked worriedly.

“Do we have to fight?”

He wasn’t sure. He wondered what it would be like.

“It’s just a precaution.”

Even if the opponents were from Solen, unlike Serenia, his safety wasn’t guaranteed. They likely wouldn’t kill him, but it wouldn’t be surprising if things turned rough.

“You’re sure…?”

Lionel cupped her cheek, looked straight into her eyes, and spoke clearly.

“When the carriage stops, I’ll step out first. No matter what happens, stay inside until I knock on the carriage door.”

He could feel the anxiety spreading across Serenia’s face, but there was nothing he could do. He always had to prepare for the worst.

“If the door opens without a knock, immediately tear these scrolls together. It will create an opening for you to escape.”

Lionel placed three magical scrolls into her hand. They contained short-distance movement Blinks, stealth to conceal her presence, and a smoke screen to blur enemies’ vision.

Then he removed his cloak and wrapped it around Serenia from her head downward. It couldn’t block a knight’s sword aura but could easily defend against ordinary arrows or thrown weapons.

Though he sincerely hoped she wouldn’t need it, the more prepared he was, the better.

“Remember, never come out unless it’s exactly one of the two scenarios I just mentioned. Even if you hear a familiar voice.”

“I’ll hide safely inside, so please don’t push yourself. As long as you don’t die, I’ll definitely heal you.”

She spoke with a seriousness as if she were watching someone head straight into certain death. Her eyes, voice, and expression were so earnestly anxious that Lionel nearly smiled without realizing it. It had been so long since someone had truly worried about him.

He felt the carriage, which had sped swiftly after deviating from the main road, begin to slow.

The scenery outside was just as he expected.

Apart from the main temple he’d visited previously, the capital had several smaller temples. This particular one was located near a commoners’ district, and behind it was a large cemetery laid out like a park.

The carriage came to a stop near the cemetery’s entrance facing the city wall.

It was already approaching dinner time, a time when even ordinary foot traffic was scarce, and now it was completely deserted.

So the presences he sensed must belong to those who boldly hijacked the carriage of the head of House Luanax inside the capital itself.

‘Vaikal Solen.’

He could hardly fail to recognize someone he’d purposefully approached by enrolling in the academy, even if he wore a mask now. And naturally, Vaikal wouldn’t have come alone.

‘At least that’s fortunate.’

Relieved Serenia’s safety was guaranteed, Lionel stepped out of the carriage without further hesitation.

As soon as the door closed behind him, he lifted his sword, still sheathed, and swung it swiftly in front of his face. The sharp whistle of something slicing through the air and the sound of impact rang simultaneously.

With no time for greetings, the attack began immediately, clearly intended to give him no pause.

Initially only deflecting the flying projectiles, Lionel soon kicked off the ground and surged forward.

If it really is her brother, is he a moron? Serenia already told him she lives Lionel and they are engaged. Why the hell is he fighting him now?!
