It was a suspicious response, but Lionel nodded once and left her in the hallway as he opened the door.

As he slipped inside, concealing his presence, he saw Serenia peeking in through the crack of the open door.

The intruder wasn’t in the drawing room. They were in his bedroom.

‘You’ve got quite the nerve.’

How dare they sneak into the Luanax master’s chamber, no less.

No, to be precise, “sneak” wasn’t the right word. There wasn’t even an attempt to hide.

‘Let’s see who you are…’

The bedroom door opened soundlessly.

And as soon as it did, the sounds began to pour out, and Lionel froze.

“Ah… too—ugh… too fast….”

A woman’s desperate moans. He knew that voice.

“Sorry, just bear with me, Vivian. I really—haaah… don’t have time right now.”

The man’s voice, too, was all too familiar.

‘What the hell is this…’

Just then, another hand settled over his on the doorknob and gently pushed the door shut.

Lionel slowly turned his head. Serenia looked up at him, mouthing something silently.

‘Leave? Just walk away from this?’

When he didn’t move, she tugged at his sleeve, urging him again.

As furious as he was at the man and woman behind that door, what else could he do? Serenia was the one saying to leave it.

Reluctantly, Lionel let go of the doorknob and followed Serenia out into the hallway.

Serenia grabbed his sleeve and pulled him into her room.

“I’m sorry for insisting that we leave.”

“No, you have nothing to be sorry for.”

Lionel sighed and said.

“May I ask why you did that?”

“Well, actually…”

Serenia touched his hand and hesitantly opened her mouth.

Dantère, that deranged bastard actually went through with it.

Rolling around in Lionel’s bed with none other than his little sister, Vivian.

He acts like a coward but pulls the most reckless stunts.

In A Night of Entwined Serpents, every time the story shifted to Dantère’s perspective, this scheme was hinted at.

‘I want to see that smug face of his distort.’

Dantère, who wandered through life like some idle rake lifting skirts, would now and then feel disgusted with his own existence.

He might have seemed the freest of them all, but in truth, Dantère couldn’t move a finger without watching the Imperial Family’s reactions.

And Lionel, his peer, born of a great house, a man who accomplished anything with ease, was someone Dantère secretly envied.

What had started as passing envy gradually twisted under the weight of his helplessness. Eventually, Dantère began to wish that Lionel, too, would taste that same suffocating sense of defeat.

And the means he chose for that purpose was Vivian.

From the moment he first laid eyes on the beautiful and innocent Vivian, Dantère had unknowingly felt desire for her. Once he learned she was Lionel’s younger sister, that desire turned to obsession.

If he could use her, he thought, he could drag Lionel into misery.

And so, as part of that scheme, Dantère made up his mind to sleep with Lionel’s sister on her brother’s own bed.

He relished imagining the moment Lionel walked in, how violently he would rage, and how deeply it would wound him.

Ordinarily, Vivian would never have fallen for something so absurd. She would’ve turned him down without a second thought.

But on the night of the masquerade at Ortatum, when she abandoned her partner Dantère and returned to the mansion to spend the night with Ardin, she’d been wracked with guilt.

And in the end, worn down by Dantère’s relentless seduction, Vivian gave in and spent the night with him in Lionel’s bedroom.
