Lionel seemed to want me to indulge in the sweet treats he’d ordered specifically for me, all in this beautiful glass conservatory blooming with flowers.

But there’s a time and place for everything.

Before he could say a word, I quickly cut in.

“I’m too full to eat any more.”

Then, shielding my mouth with one hand so the three sitting across from us couldn’t see, I leaned in and whispered directly into his ear. “Because someone filled me up already.”

Lionel inhaled sharply on reflex, the tip of his ear flaring red, just as red as Vivian’s had been.

“…Come to think of it, this really isn’t the time. Let’s go.”

He stood first and pulled out my chair.

“Then we’ll be going ahead. Please, enjoy your conversation.”

It felt too cruel to keep sitting there, shamelessly watching things unfold. Vivian had already overexerted herself just trying to shake off Halid.

‘Besides, didn’t Lionel say he bought out this whole bakery street?’

I’d heard he’d purchased every café and patisserie on that row. That’s how they sent the most popular new desserts to Luanax every morning.

I could have them whenever I wanted, so it was fine to hold back for now.

Once we stepped out of the glasshouse, Lionel asked.

“Is your stomach bothering you?”

He always seemed especially at ease around Halid. I suppose now I knew why. They were both brilliant in their fields of focus,  and utterly clueless in certain other areas.

“In the future, we should refrain from doing such things outs-”

“The weather’s so lovely today. Cool, perfect for a walk, don’t you think?”

I rushed to cut him off.

We couldn’t forget: the servants in this house had a habit of speaking too freely thanks to Lionel’s deliberate neglect. And even from a distance, I could clearly see how some of them were pricking up their ears.

As he tilted his head and glanced down at me, Lionel removed his jacket and draped it over my shoulders.

“It may feel a little chilly to you after a while.”

I hadn’t really meant for us to go walking, but a short stroll while talking didn’t sound so bad. So we headed toward the gardens.

Naturally, the servants were all left behind at the greenhouse.

Only when we’d put some distance between us did I speak.

“Before things got any more suggestive, I figured we should make our exit.”

“…I see.”

“I heard the soul that took over Vivian’s body came from another world. Do you know what kind of person she used to be?”

Ever since learning Vivian was possessed, I’d been curious. Was she from the same world as me? If so, had she ever read A Night of Entwined Serpents?

“I was told she’d just come of age. She worked as a teacher for children. Apparently, she got so passionately absorbed in her hobbies that she ended up in this world.”

“I see…”

Come to think of it, I guess I was sent here because I got too obsessed with my own hobby too.

Still, thanks to that, I was reincarnated into a family that loved me dearly, and I got to meet the most wonderful Lionel. So yes, it’s always worth giving your all, no matter what it is.

“But why do you ask?”

I paused for a moment before answering his question.

“Just wondering… what comes after death. Whether we’re reborn in another world, or if we end up in heaven or hell.”

Since my arm was looped through his, I could feel it. The faint tremor in his body.

“Of course, your regressions will have to end first. Growing old might not be the most thrilling prospect, but it’s the natural order of things.”

I hadn’t lived past this age in my previous life either.

If we could safely get rid of everything threatening us, uncover the secret to halting his regression, and live out our days together, wrinkled and sweet as grandparents, how lovely would that be?

Just imagining it brought a smile to my face.
