“You haven’t cleaned it up yet.”

“They said they needed confirmation from the Duke about where to move it. So I was waiting.”

Lionel pressed firmly between his brows. Halid just stood there placidly, not knowing what the problem was.

“Lionel, what happened?”

From the situation, it seemed like he had been sitting there even when Lionel came in.

Then was that also the reason he suggested leaving the capital earlier than planned?

“Actually… there was an attack while I was away from the mansion.”

“The Luanax mansion was… attacked?”

There were two bodies sprawled out. How was that even possible?

“They must have infiltrated the mansion as trading merchants. Inside where there were no knights, they moved around disguised as knights.”

Well, these days were a period when many outsiders frequently came and went from the mansion. The quantity of goods being purchased was considerable due to preparations for the wedding to be held in Hered.

Originally there had been knights inside the mansion too, but after Halid practically took up residence following Dantère and Ardin, Lionel had rotated all that personnel to external guard duty.

Lionel called over a nearby servant and had them fetch attendant Cale.

“Should I heal them a little?”

“It’s fine. I didn’t inflict enough damage for it to be fatal.”

At Halid’s answer, I looked at the sprawled figures again.

‘That’s…?’

They looked like it wouldn’t be strange to say they were already dead.

“They’re not worth showing mercy to. They’re criminals sentenced to lifelong hard labor for human trafficking.”

Lionel stroked the back of my hand, telling me not to worry about it.

“It’s not that I feel sympathy for them. I just thought you should keep them breathing…. If they’re useless, it doesn’t matter if they die or not.”

I shrugged.

It might seem cold-hearted for someone who was a priestess until recently, but this is my true nature.

In my past life too, when talk of criminals came up, I’d think inwardly, ‘They should get paid back the same way!’

S*x offenders? Cut that off so they can never do it again. Murderers? Isn’t the tax money keeping them alive a waste?

My past life was a world with fairly good public order and equality before the law, yet there were many people who suffered from injustices. How much more so in this world? A blatantly unequal world where class differences exist starkly.

In a world like this, those who commit crimes must absolutely never be let off lightly.

When a violent criminal walks into a slum and beats several people to death, there’s no one to appeal to, no one to avenge the grudge.

Look at readers’ reviews of saintesses who claim chances for change should be given because of unfortunate circumstances. They get tremendous criticism as cancer-inducing characters. And there’s a good reason for that.

If you’re going to make such claims, don’t irresponsibly release them but monitor thoroughly to the end. If you can’t do that, it’s right to just swish-slash them away.

“Right. Vermin should be exterminated.”

At the languid voice flowing in, I turned around.

Vivian stood looking at the criminals, having come down at some point.

“Leave those for big brother to handle and let’s eat lunch, shall we?”

“Mm….”

At Vivian’s suggestion, I looked up at Lionel.

Though he frowned as if displeased, he nodded.

“I’ll come right away, so go ahead and eat first.”

“Yes, then I’ll do that.”

It worked out well since I had something to discuss with Vivian alone anyway.

…No, but shouldn’t you let go of my hand so I can go?

When I struggled to pull my hand free from Lionel’s arm, the corners of his eyes gradually drooped. Along with the corners of his mouth.

‘I-if you look at me with such a pitiful expression….’

Don’t misunderstand. The dining room is especially close to the central stairs, even on the same first floor. It meant I wasn’t going far away.

What should I do about Lionel’s worsening separation anxiety day by day?

“What are you doing, big brother?”

Unable to watch any longer, Vivian coldly pushed Lionel aside and extracted my hand.

I looked at her with eyes wide open.

‘She’s surprisingly strong?’

Though her stamina was terrible, her grip strength was considerable.

Having ended up even holding hands with Vivian, I headed to the dining room, leaving Lionel behind.

“Sasha has been through so much.”

I hesitated for a moment before answering.

“So have you, Vivian.”

“That’s right. I’ve been through no small amount of hardship myself.”
