Me, the Weakest Member of the Hero’s Party? I’m the Villain Though? - Chapter 33
Kyle’s voice, as he grabbed the back of my head, made me sigh. Why was Kyle always so desperate not to let me leave?
“Do you still have business with me?”
“What do you mean, ‘business’? How can you say something so cold between us?”
What could ever be ‘between us’, anyway? There was nothing between us. I hid my tired expression and pressed my forehead.
“What is it you want to say?”
Annoyingly, I found myself bothered by Kyle again. Maybe it was because I felt guilty for deceiving him. Honestly, it was also partly my fault those guys were in danger in the first place.
“I have a favor to ask.”
“Let me hear it first, and then I’ll decide.”
Since we were parting ways, I could grant at least one favor. But if it was troublesome, I planned to refuse.
“I need someone to meet with Archbishop Fremlyn and deliver this news. He’s our last hope.”
I wasn’t sure how meeting the archbishop would help, but Kyle’s expression was earnest.
“What should I tell him if I meet him?”
“If it’s Archbishop Fremlyn, he might be able to persuade His Majesty to give us one more chance. If even he says it’s impossible, then we’ll consider escaping at that point. Nobody wants to be branded as imperial criminals and hunted down, right?”
In the end, I let out a reluctant sigh.
Fine, I’ll help them out of prison. Just that much.
If they were really executed, it would weigh on me forever. It wasn’t too late to save their lives and then move on with a clear conscience.
Besides, I didn’t have anything urgent to do right now anyway.
“Alright. I’ll do just this one favor, then I’m going my own way. So remember that.”
“Thank you, Lysian. I’ll never forget this favor.”
I wasn’t expecting any repayment. I was doing this out of guilt, after all.
Leaving the party, who were sitting gloomily behind the bars, I exited the prison.
Dawn was breaking, and the surroundings were slowly getting brighter. This time, I started wandering through the vast imperial castle in search of the archbishop. I wiped the sweat from my forehead with the back of my hand. The armor made it hot.
I honestly wondered how knights wore such heavy, cumbersome armor every day.
“…But where do I even find the archbishop?”
I’d answered so confidently, but now that I was actually looking, I had no idea where to start. It had been Brayden’s idea to find the prison tower, and to put on the soldiers’ armor, too.
“Hey, you there.”
As I walked along, deep in thought, someone’s voice called out. I naturally assumed they were calling someone else, so I ignored it and kept walking.
“Hey, you! Don’t you hear your superior talking to you?”
Suddenly, something flew at me and hit the back of my head with a clang. I turned around, full of annoyance.
But when I saw a bunch of soldiers standing behind me, my heart almost dropped.
“What is it?”
“What is it? What is it? Are you answering like that when the captain calls you? Huh?”
He must have been the guard captain. Remembering that I was disguised as a soldier, I hurriedly bowed my head and gave a salute.
“I’m sorry, sir!”
“I’m letting you off because I’m busy. Now get over here. We’re short on people right now, so drop whatever you were doing and join us.”
Damn it. I was busy enough trying to find the archbishop. What do they mean, join them?
Still, it was obvious that refusing and running off would only cause more trouble, so I decided to just pretend to follow orders until I could slip away.
I swallowed a sigh and walked at the very back of the soldiers, when someone quietly came up beside me.
“Did you… meet the prisoners?”
Startled, I turned my head to see Brayden looking at me with a cautious expression.
“Brayden?”
I never thought I’d be so happy to see this unfamiliar boy. When I called him gladly, Brayden put a finger to his lips.
“Do you know what’s going on right now?”
I gestured at the group of guards hurrying somewhere and asked. Brayden glanced around nervously, then whispered.
“It’s about the soldiers who disappeared yesterday. Someone happened to see them heading north. And there was also a report that black flames were spotted, so everyone thinks they were attacked by a monster.”
