The Wicked Wife's Dark History Keeps Coming Back To Haunt Her - Chapter 138
âBecause of thatâŚâ
Just recently, because of that appalling gift that woman had sent, Nina almost created yet another moment in her dark history in front of her husband.
As the memory of that day flashed through her mind, a wicked impulse suddenly surged.
âHoney, could you lean down for a moment?â
When he bent down with a puzzled look, she rose up on tiptoe and brought her lips close to his ear.
âIâm going to get on Duchess Nordâs nerves a little. You know, when you whisper in someoneâs ear in public, people always think youâre talking about them, and it drives them crazy.â
âAh.â
âAnd while youâre at it, please glance at Duchess Nord. Make her so curious she could die.â
He glanced at Rebecca with a peculiar look and gave a faint smirk, just as she asked.
This was from experience.
That maddening feeling when you think people are talking about you.
Especially if the whisperer is the man youâre infatuated with. She surely wouldnât be able to stand it.
ââŚWhat are you two whispering about so sweetly?â
As expected, Rebecca, who had been chatting with others, couldnât contain her curiosity and approached.
âItâs between husband and wife, so itâs a bit⌠difficult to share.â
Nina gave a smiling glance and let her words trail off, making Rebecca narrow her eyes as if trying to gauge something.
âI see that your husband isnât here today, is he?â
âHe had something urgent to attend to and couldnât make it. As you know, my husbandâs been busy lately with business projectsâŚâ
Rebecca forced a bittersweet smile and continued.
âAnyway, I heard the news. I was so impressed when I heard you were sponsoring a young artist who almost had to give up on his dreams because of his circumstances, despite his talent.â
Rebecca smiled shyly and took a subtle step closer.
It was a distance that wasnât quite impolite but was close enough to make one uncomfortable.
Rebecca, all smiles, was doing something that wouldâve gotten under her skin in her previous life.
But Ash showed no reaction at all.
âDid you forget you once stood on the balcony spouting nonsense about my husband taking a mistress?â
Nina could only laugh incredulously at Rebeccaâs brazen âfriendlinessâ, acting as if sheâd forgotten all about that.
âI was so inspired by your good deeds that I joined the foundation and decided to sponsor a child myself. Let me introduce you to the child Iâm sponsoring.â
So thatâs what this is about.
Did she think if she praised my husband and smiled in front of me, Iâd get jealous and react?
âIâm very curious to meet the artist sponsored by you, Duchess Nord.â
As Nina replied nonchalantly, Rebecca simply smiled more broadly and walked away.
Who exactly was this artist she was so confident about?
She was curious, but only for a moment.
ââŚWhat on earth is this?â
Ninaâs brows knitted at the sight before her.
The children who should have been the stars of todayâs eventâthe ones Marquis Dunklin was introducingâwere standing there in clothes completely unsuited for the occasion.
Most of them seemed to be between 12 and 15 years old.
Judging by their poor nutrition, some could be even older.
They should have been dressed in smart suits, but instead, they wore old, ragged clothes stained with paint.
Standing among the guests in their clean, luxurious clothes, the children seemed like the only outsiders in the room.
Despite being the protagonists of the day, the boys looked anything but happy.
âThatâs the child Iâm sponsoring.â
Rebecca pointed to one.
âHe lost his right arm in an accident, but he refused to give up his dream and managed to finish his exhibition piece with his left hand. His talent is exceptional, but seeing how hard he worked, I just had to help.â
âRefused to give up on his dreamâŚâ
âIsnât he admirable?â
Rebecca smiled proudly, as if sheâd performed some great act of kindness.
âShe says a child who hasnât given up on his dream has eyes like thatâŚ?â
The boy, with his oddly bent arm in a splint, had dead, black eyes.
Then Rebecca, as if she were his mother, began introducing the boy to the other guests, laughing and chatting.
The children did not look happy at all.
They forced smiles as they glanced nervously at the adults.
The boy sponsored by Rebecca, especially, looked terrified, as if he had been dragged out against his will.
Even if this were a properly run charityâŚ
This was filthy.
Far too filthy, even for this world.
Erica
Please please PLEASE let Nina do something about this. I hope she takes that boy aside and tells him she can help him and his siblings, (since thatâs probably how they are threatening him). I canât stand when they use commoner children like that, makes me sick or just as Nina said, filthy. Please be his dame in shining armour as save them next chapter đ
