“Honey, do you even know what kind of state you’re in?!”

Frederick’s cravat was nowhere to be seen, and his collar was left hanging open in disarray.

The stench of alcohol wafted thickly from him.

“Well, well. For my great and lofty wife to come out and greet me. Should I offer my deepest gratitude with a grand bow to satisfy you?”

“Don’t do this here. Let’s go inside and talk.”

Frederick pushed Rebecca’s hand away and spoke in a slurred voice.

“Heh. If it weren’t for your grandfather, everyone knows I’m a man who couldn’t even save face, so what do you mean, don’t do this?”

Just how drunk was he? Frederick waddled forward unsteadily on his short legs.

Rebecca glared at his back.

His behavior was no different from that of commoners.

All he had was expensive clothes on his back. In every other way, he was compared to Duke Bayern from top to bottom.

This was why she hadn’t wanted to marry him.

Because Nina had married Duke Bayern, her parents had pushed her into marrying a duke as well.

This was the outcome.

Having married such trash, even her grandfather had been dragged into trouble.

If at least his appearance were decent, maybe she could have looked upon him with some favor.

But even his looks were like this, leaving nothing good to see.

Still, allowing cracks to form in her household was something she could not tolerate.

That was, apart from her contempt for her husband, the pride she held as a noblewoman.

‘A man is shaped by his woman…’

She had to coax her husband somehow, calm him down, and get him to take responsibility for cleaning up the mess he had made, even now.

If her grandfather had come all the way to the house, broken down the study door, and torn the place apart, this was by no means a matter to take lightly.

Suppressing the urge to raise her voice at Frederick, Rebecca stepped toward him.

“Honey, I know why you’re angry, but—”

At that moment, mingled with the stench of alcohol, a strangely feminine scent pricked her nose.

Her gaze naturally dropped to the inside of her husband’s undone jacket.

There, on his shirt, was a mark clearly left by cosmetics. It was a woman’s trace.

The nerves she had barely held together for four days finally reached their breaking point.

“…The household has fallen into this state, and you go out drinking and meeting women?”

“W-What…?”

Was it because his wrongdoing had been discovered?

He faltered only for a moment.

“W-What nonsense are you spouting? Are you becoming like that Duchess Bayern now?”

…Becoming like who?

For an instant, fire flared in her eyes.

“There’s clear evidence right before my eyes, and you call me that crazy, delusional woman? That’s what you say to me after not coming home for four days?”

“Ha! If you had even a shred of conscience, the first thing you’d do is apologize for what your grandfather did in my house!”

Rebecca’s eyes grew vicious.

“Apologize? And who caused that incident, that you dare tell me to apologize now?”

Frederick shouted back, veins bulging in his neck, as if he were the one wronged.

“So what if I skimmed off a bit of money? What, your grandfather is so clean that he has the right to act this way? It’s fine if he does it, but not if I do?”

“What you did was against the Minis—!”

She froze.

Mid-sentence, Rebecca realized the weight of what she was saying and swept her eyes around.

The surroundings were dead quiet.

The coachman. The maids peeking from behind the windows. The other servants.

Everyone was watching, eyes full of curiosity.

Carried away by her emotions, she had forgotten this fact.

“Anyway… I’m tired, so I’ll go up first. As for our esteemed… granddaughter of the Finance Minister… well, do as you please.”

With a dismissive wave of his hand, Frederick stepped into the mansion.

“……”

Rebecca’s brow twisted in a grotesque scowl.

She had intended to coax him and quietly settle things inside the mansion.

But unable to control her sudden anger, she had ruined it all.

And if what happened today spread as rumor?

She could end up experiencing what Nina had suffered for two years.

More than her grandfather’s position being shaken because of Frederick’s corruption.

The thought of such gossip spreading was enough to drive her mad.

And wasn’t all of this because of Duke Bayern?

He had deliberately led her to a misunderstanding and provoked her.

‘And now you mean to hold me responsible?’

The malice she had once directed at Nina now flared like sparks toward Duke Bayern.

‘Come to think of it… I heard the heir to House Bayern had returned…’

According to recent news, Nina was said to be making every effort to help the heir form friendships.

And wasn’t it widely known that Duke Bayern had suffered greatly because of the guardianship trial?

‘…Wasn’t Count Azelot eyeing the guardianship rights?’

Her emerald eyes began to glisten with the sheen of a base, scheming plot.
