Thought It Was 'The End', Only to Return to a Changed Genre - Chapter 217
Adeline swallowed her tears as she noticed the vivid red marks and bite impressions around her collarbone and neck.
While they didnât hurt much, they looked terrible.
It seemed Shane had mastered the art of leaving marks without causing pain. Even when he couldnât hold back and nibbled her skin, he would immediately stop if Adeline so much as winced.
The problem was that these marks were in very noticeable spots.
Tomorrow, she was scheduled to have her dress tailored and would have to meet Rachel and Emma. While she might be able to cover them up from Emma, avoiding Rachelâs sharp eyes was nearly impossible.
âI told you not to leave marks.â
âI couldnât help it. I liked it too much.â
How ridiculous.
Adeline scoffed.
She vividly remembered locking eyes with Shane just before he bit her neck. He had clearly noticed her intention to say no and had promptly sunk his teeth in before she could.
The one who had lacked control wasnât Shaneâit was Adeline herself.
Even as she thought, I shouldnât let this happen, she couldnât bring herself to stop him. Of course, Shane had probably anticipated her reaction all along.
Shane hugged Adeline from behind, gathering her long hair to one side before kissing her exposed neck.
âSorry. Are you mad?â
âAnd yet youâre doing it again! Again!â
âHahaha.â
Who was he trying to fool?
Did he think that sweet words and kisses could make her let everything slide?
Adeline, bristling, grabbed Shaneâs head and pretended to pull at his hair. Concerned she might actually hurt him, she switched to pulling at his ears instead.
Even as she tugged his ears like a monkey, Shane just kept smiling. What on earth was so amusing?
âRachelâs going to tease me about it. Sheâll ask if I enjoy it that much.â
âBe confident, Adeline. Just tell her the truth.â
âAnd what would I even say?â
âTell her that you do.â
ââŚâŚâ
âWhatâs there to be embarrassed about?â
Whatâs embarrassing is that youâre like this.
Of course, Adeline loved Shane, but sharing every detail of their married life with the world was a completely different matter. Rachel, always sly, would grin and ask, âDo you still like it that much?â
At the same time, Rachel had a knack for selling her dressesâespecially those with designs that covered the neck and shoulders.
âIf you hate that I wear clothes revealing my neck and shoulders so much, then stop biting and just say something!â
âItâs not that I hate it.â
Shane ran his hand over Adelineâs collarbone and shoulders.
The elegant curve of her shoulders and her long, graceful neckâlike that of a deerâwere among Adelineâs many charms.
âBeautiful things should be shown off, not hidden.â
âThen why do you do this?â
Shane was an overly affectionate husband, not some obsessive, overbearing male lead from another genre. Sure, he might have a striking face and strong features like those male leads, but he didnât act like he wanted to devour someone whole.
âI just canât help it. Youâre so beautiful that I feel like I could eat you up.â
ââŚâŚâ
Adeline was stunned.
Did I marry a clingy husband or a cannibal?!
âIâll do my best to hold back.â
âPlease do. I want to live a long lifeâŚâ
How hard had she fought to reclaim this life? She had only just started to enjoy hobbies and leisure.
âWhat a thrilling life I have.â
How funâŚ
Adeline sniffled, swallowing her fear.
*
Adeline was a textbook introvert, drained by external activities.
Not only was it tiring to be mindful of othersâ gazes, but Shaneâs habit of picking her up wherever she went doubled the burden.
Shane insisted he did it because he could, but knowing he was busy, Adeline couldnât help but feel guilty when he came to get her every time. On the rare occasions she told him not to come, he would visibly sulk.
âI wonder if this could be separation anxiety.â
When Adeline sought advice, Jeff made a disgusted face and teased her.
ââŚYeah, sure. Heâs got a little bit of that going on.â
âIf youâre apart for more than two days, he might start throwing up.â
ââŚâŚâ
âThat was a joke, Adeline. Your husbandâs a human being, not a dog.â
Even if Shane didnât throw up, Jeffâs words made her think his aide might.
When Adeline told Shane about the conversation, he laughed and said,
âMaybe not vomiting, but Iâd probably get annoyed.â
ââŚâŚâ
âDonât feel pressured, Adeline. Iâm not trying to restrict you. You can go wherever you wantâof course.â
âI know.â
If he really wanted to restrict me, heâd do it more thoroughly, wouldnât he?
âI just thought it was strange not to visit when I could. But if itâs a burden, Iâll hold back.â
What was there to hold back?
Adeline wasnât exactly upset with him either. She just felt guilty for making him hold back.
The best compromise for both of them was to reduce her outings altogether.
