Yes, yes, it was my fault for forgetting. But when people are in a panic, it’s only natural to blame someone else.

“Call Jamie for me, Your Highness!”

Helios burst out laughing, clearly amused by my frantic state.

“Relax, Rienna. There’s plenty of time. I only got ready early because of our treatment.”

“Oh, right! I still have to get treated. I can’t afford to collapse during the banquet.”

The fact that Helios’s name was imprinted on me had to remain a strict secret.

That’s why we had agreed to do a proper treatment session before the banquet.

There might be plenty of time left for everyone else, but for me? Not nearly enough.

“Well, that won’t be a problem,” Helios said smoothly. “Should we start the treatment now?”

Helios caught the dressing room door just before it closed, his hand bracing against the frame. Then, he leaned in through the gap, his face suddenly much too close.

A sweet scent clung to him — the kind that stirred something low in my belly, a hunger that had nothing to do with food.

“Wouldn’t it be better without Jamie around?”

Logic screamed that I needed to get ready. But for some reason, my grip on the door weakened.

Just enough for him to slip inside.

Helios stepped into the dressing room and locked the door behind him.

“No time to waste.”

His hands found my shoulders, pulling me toward him. As if responding to an unspoken signal, my fingers curled tightly around the front of his jacket.

His head dipped, slow and deliberate.

The heat in his gaze deepened, like magma pressing beneath the earth’s surface, waiting for the right moment to erupt.

And in an instant, it caught me, igniting against my skin.

His tongue slipped into my mouth, languid and sure, tracing and teasing with a deliberate tenderness.

The kiss was as tender as ever.

So the blunt pressure against my lower abdomen felt all the more foreign.

I knew exactly what it was. My spine stiffened instinctively, but Helios didn’t miss even that small reaction.

He pulled back just enough for our lips to barely touch, his voice dropping to a murmur.

“I’m sorry. I can’t really help it.”

His tone, however, held no trace of apology.

I scowled up at him, but instead of looking guilty, he only scrunched his eyes as if he were the one having a hard time.

“I’ll take care of it before we head into the banquet. So let’s keep going, yeah?”

I was the one who needed this treatment.

And yet, the situation always seemed to flip itself around.

Hearing his attempt to reassure me only made me more aware of my own predicament.

I buried my face in the crook of his neck, breathing in his warmth.

He wasn’t the only one who needed to calm down.

A restless ache pulsed between my thighs, and it was driving me insane.

I might not have experienced true intimacy before, but I wasn’t naive — I knew exactly what this was.

If this kept up, I wouldn’t make it to the banquet at all. I’d be too busy clinging to his lips, lost in this feverish heat, until Jamie inevitably found me and quipped, “Did you get stung by a bee, my lady?”

“Could  you calm down a little bit, please?”

At my words, a strained sound escaped from him, as if he was troubled.

“More than this? You might as well just stop me.”

He pulled me into his embrace firmly, completely disregarding my request. His kiss remained persistent, yet it was still soft and sweet, almost making me collapse into him.

The Imperial Consort Priscilla’s birthday celebration was held in the Second Banquet Hall.

It was smaller than the First Banquet Hall, which was reserved for the Queen and the Emperor themselves, but it was no less opulent.

The delicate carvings on the round columns, the grand chandeliers hanging from the high ceiling, and the imported doorknobs and decorations from abroad were all stunning, leaving everyone in awe.

When combined with the items Priscilla had personally funded for the event, those entering the hall couldn’t help but gape in astonishment.

Though, it wasn’t obvious due to them hiding their guilty faces behind their handheld fans.

I was one of those people.

“It looks like a lot of money was spent.”

While waiting for the entrance announcement, I spoke to Helios.

I put a bit more strength into the arm linked with his, and he turned his head toward me, lowering his face to the height of my fan.

“That’s all debt.”

“Debt?”

Helios smiled meaningfully.

I knew that Priscilla’s family had been wealthy for generations, so hearing about debt was surprising.

Was there something I didn’t know? I became curious.

“What are you doing here? Were you waiting for me?”

Just as I was about to continue the conversation with him, Queen Demyr appeared.
