Garden of May - Chapter 141
For a moment, Louise looked as though she hadn’t even processed what she’d just heard. The bright smile she’d been wearing as she gazed at her son froze in place. Then, in an instant, her face drained of color, so pale it was almost pitiful.
“Blair… I must have had too much to drink.”
With unfocused eyes, she reached out, brushing his cheek and hair as if to confirm he was real. Then, suddenly, she let out a clear, ringing laugh. Like a drunk trying to flee reality, her trembling lips that were moments ago on the verge of spitting curses, curved into a perfectly composed smile.
“I must have dozed off for a moment. I’m even hearing things now…”
“I intend to propose to Vanessa as soon as I break off my engagement with Cissy.”
“I really should… quit drinking altogether…”
“I came to tell you this. You deserve to know.”
The smile slowly vanished from her lips, which had been muttering as if she hadn’t heard him at all. In its place came shock, rage, sorrow—and something sharp, vicious.
Her eyes widened as though she were staring at something utterly incomprehensible.
“I’ll settle the engagement with the Bronte family within the week. I imagine you won’t want to see me for a while, so I’ll be staying at the estate in the south—the one prepared for my marriage. Once everything is resolved, we’ll leave for Nord.”
“Blair!”
Her shrill scream cracked through the air like lightning. Her clenched fists struck his chest and shoulders over and over, trembling with fury.
“Do you have any idea how I raised you?! What I endured—for you!”
“Then that’s good news. You won’t have to endure it anymore.”
“Do you think you’ll be forgiven for this? For treating your own mother like this? Over some worthless girl—how could you?!”
“Her name is Vanessa. Not ‘some worthless girl.’”
Blair seized both of Louise’s wrists and lowered them firmly. His face was cold, his voice even colder.
“And she is the only daughter of the dearest friend you once cherished.”
“Blair Fabian Winchester!”
“If you no longer consider me your son, I don’t mind. I didn’t come here to ask for permission.”
Louise pressed a pale hand to her forehead.
“Blair… please…”
“I plan to marry Vanessa early next year. Until then, I’ll remain in the south. If you ever feel inclined to bless us, you’re welcome to visit. You’ll be received warmly.”
Her trembling lips twisted into a strange, crimson smile.
“And she’s willing to marry you? Willingly?”
“People’s minds can change at any time. Especially now, when her so-called ‘precious’ and insignificant standing is on the verge of complete ruin.”
Louise stared at him, dazed, as if she’d just been struck. Her suddenly hollow gaze looked as though it stood on the edge of a bottomless abyss.
“…Was it you? That filthy rumor…”
Blair swallowed a bitter breath. The way she acted as if this were some shocking revelation made him let out a faint laugh.
Whether they orchestrated it, encouraged it, or simply stood by—Vanessa’s pitiful situation was, in truth, the combined handiwork of three men.
All of them had played a part.
To use that poor girl more cleanly. Or to push her into desperation, until she would have no choice but to take his hand.
“All the Young Lord needs to confirm is one thing…”
What did that reporter look like again?
“Whether he has ever seen the Duke near Gloucester. Or whether he has ever witnessed the woman meeting the Duke even once.”
There was no need to fabricate anything. A single nod would suffice.
Reading the answer in Blair’s calm expression, Louise let out a hollow laugh. Her hands fumbled desperately across the table, searching for alcohol.
At last, she seized a half-filled wine bottle. Her attempt to yank out the loosely plugged cork was clumsy, just like any drunk’s would be. When it wouldn’t come free after several tries, her breathing grew ragged.
Blair moved to take the bottle from her—
“Then I’d rather—!”
Crash. With a scream that sounded almost like a cry, Louise hurled the bottle at the wall with all her strength. Glass shattered, and liquid splattered everywhere.
“Then I’d rather…”
Blood trickled down her pale ankle where shards had grazed her skin.
Staggering toward her son, her eyes bloodshot and unfocused as if she no longer knew what she was saying, Louise clutched at his collar with trembling hands.
“Then kill me instead… kill your own mother…”
“I’m tired of this argument.”
Blair brushed her hands off coldly, as though straightening his clothes.
“Have I ever truly defied you before? Why can’t you understand that this is that important to me?”
“Anyone but her!”
Her shrill scream burst out again, cutting through the air.
In that brief moment of his hesitation, Louise seized her chance. Grabbing his large hand, she pressed it against her tear-soaked face.
“Bring any woman in the world, but not her… Blair, please… you have to trust your mother…”
“I don’t understand why you hate Vanessa this much.”
Louise lifted her tear-filled eyes and stared straight at him.
