Garden of May - Chapter 75
Chapter 75
“My bag… It’s gone.”
“Your bag?”
Vanessa nodded, her hand crumpling her skirt, betraying the composure she was trying to maintain. “The kitten was so small, I set my bag down for just a moment…”
Her faltering explanation painted a clear picture. She’d been handed the kitten, and in the surprise, set her bag down. By the time she remembered, it had vanished. He summarized the situation succinctly. “You were robbed.”
“What am I going to do? The gifts for my friends were in there.”
“Give up on getting it back.”
“Is there really nothing we can do?”
Well, it was impossible. It would be faster to simply replace the contents. His silence seemed to confirm her fears, her pretty eyes clouding with anxiety.
“If we reported it to the police…”
“It’s pointless. They wouldn’t be working alone.”
“But still… Maybe someone turned it in.”
Vanessa, scanning the area, spotted a policeman and hurried towards him, waving. Theodore watched her, placing the dry end of a cigarette between his lips.
Her tendency to see the good in people was both her strength and her weakness. Perhaps it was a survival instinct of the vulnerable. In this world, sometimes feigning ignorance was the better strategy.
And yet, sometimes… he wondered if she truly was a good person. His initial cynicism—how good could someone be who tried to buy people with money?—had faded. He now felt he knew Vanessa, to a certain extent.
She preferred a hundred books to a hundred dresses, enjoyed tending her rose garden, and loved quiet solitude more than the frivolous chatter of social gatherings. A noblewoman who earned her own living, her way of thinking was unique, bordering on impertinent.
These small, insignificant details formed the essence of who she was.
He dismissed the urge to smoke, his gaze fixed on the woman across the street, now half-swallowed by the evening shadows. The warm glow spilling from a nearby shop illuminated her profile as she earnestly explained something to the policeman.
He stared at her soft features for a moment, then strode towards her.
“It was about ten… no, five minutes ago… near the stall at the end of that alley…”
The policeman, glancing at Vanessa’s pretty face, dutifully recorded the details in his notebook, already filled with similar entries. “It’s a common tactic these days, a nasty bunch. They’ll steal anything—jewelry, even children in the blink of an eye… Oh, by the way, what is your name?”
The unexpected question silenced Vanessa. She couldn’t give her real name here; her uncle would be immediately notified. But she couldn’t give a false name and waste the policeman’s time either.
Flustered, she instinctively crumpled her skirt. What was she supposed to do?
“Theo.”
Suddenly, a hand appeared above her, taking the notebook and pen from the officer, who stared at him in surprise. “Ah, are you together?”
Vanessa looked up at River Ross, who had materialized beside her. He scribbled something in the notebook and returned it to the officer. Peeking, she saw an unfamiliar name.
“You can contact me at this address.”
“Very well. I’ll let you know if we find anything.”
