Garden of May - Chapter 96
She seduced him. Just one night was enough. She thought she could live and breathe on the memory of it for the rest of her life. She had been blissfully happy, or so she believed. Until the next morning, when she discovered that the man she had spent the night with wasn’t him, but his younger brother. A month later, her period stopped.
Her cycles had never been regular, but given the circumstances, each passing day was agonizing. Wyatt scoffed, denying the possibility of the child being his. The next day, he fled with a lowly maid under the cover of night.
Consumed by despair and guilt, Louise confessed to Henry that she had spent a night with another man. That she believed she was carrying his child.
“Who knows about this?”
“I haven’t told anyone, Henry… only you and him.”
“Then the wedding will proceed as planned.”
Henry’s voice was chillingly calm, laced with a strange possessiveness.
“If there’s a child in your womb, it’s already mine. So bear the child, Louise. And spend the rest of your life atoning by my side.”
Back then, her husband had been her savior. At first, she felt only gratitude. After giving birth to twins seven months into their marriage, she readily yielded to his desires whenever he demanded it. In the opera house box, in the hallways of ballrooms, and here, in the brightly lit drawing-room in the middle of the day.
Tragically, however, they were unable to conceive another child. After a visit to the doctor about ten years into their marriage, Henry became more violent during s3x.
“Blair says he wants to spend his honeymoon in the south, even after the wedding.”
Louise lifted her flushed face.
“I know. I… I was against it from the start. It’s because you allowed the children to stay in Somerset…”
“I don’t mind the children spending time with Vanessa.”
“I do. You shouldn’t have given in to their whims.”
“I enjoy seeing you so agitated.”
“Honestly, ugh, you have such terrible taste.”
As her husband thrust into her with a rough urgency, Louise bit back a moan, her fingers digging into the edge of the table.
“Do you believe that blood relatives instinctively recognize each other, Louise?”
His question, seemingly out of the blue, was tinged with amusement.
“I wonder if our children will recognize their true father.”
Our children. It was almost a mockery. Henry hadn’t asked about that day in all these years, and at some point, she had even begun to deceive herself into believing they were his. Until Blair chose Vanessa, that girl, as his own.
Her husband’s strange demeanor was suddenly shocking. How could he know everything and still…
“You’re so naive. Did you really think I wouldn’t notice, with you being so obvious?”
Her thoughts scattered. A soft cry escaped Louise’s lips. Henry, seemingly pleased by her response, bit down hard on the nape of her neck.
As if to announce to the world how wanton she truly was. He had personally chosen the dress she was to wear to the social gathering in two days, a gown that left her neck and shoulders bare. Henry traced the lingering red marks on Louise’s pale neck with a satisfied air.
“It’s fortunate that the children resemble only you.”
“Henry, ugh, please stop.”
“Sometimes, it makes me feel as if they truly are my blood. They look just like you, and I raised them from the cradle.”
Louise’s nails dug into the table again, a gesture of defiance. Otherwise, what would separate her from those fools who, besotted with their mistresses, bequeathed their entire fortunes to their illegitimate sons? His whispered words against her ear were utterly cruel.
He adjusted his grip on her weakened waist, thrusting a few more times, a smile playing on his lips.
“Blair will be my perfect heir. As long as you continue to fulfill your wifely duties, just like this.”
“Ah…”
“I love you, Louise. More than anything.”
Louise closed her eyes, a weak moan escaping her lips. Her husband had saved her, but he had not forgiven her. And he would never let her forget it.
