Cecilia’s origin was revealed not through herself nor Logan, but through Margaret’s mouth.

Margaret was immediately sent back to her room, and Adam disappeared, saying they should discuss it again at dawn.

However, even if he didn’t want it, time passed, and the day broke.

Early in the morning, Adam had no choice but to face the issue at hand.

He decided to hold his head high and shamelessly proceed.

“It’s surprising,” Adam said calmly to Logan. “I never imagined you didn’t know.”

“There was no hint, so of course, I couldn’t know.”

“Didn’t I tell you? I thought I had conveyed everything about the child.”

“Then it seems I missed it.”

“Yes, it appears some parts were omitted in the communication.”

“If that’s the case, I’ll ask my grandfather and confirm the facts.”

“……”

The head of the Harper family was known for being eccentric and hot-tempered. Once he turned his back, information from the western trade groups would be as good as lost.

“Is Cecilia really not an option?”

Adam asked, his tone slightly softened.

“There’s nothing wrong with her appearance. She’s quiet and obedient too.”

“Pfft.”

Logan coughed and covered his mouth.

“Oh, excuse me.”

He cleared his throat a few more times and composed his expression.

“Miss Cecilia is indeed beautiful. There’s no denying that.”

As Logan said this, Adam’s eyes briefly showed hope. However, Logan continued.

“But whether my grandfather will see her origins favorably is another matter…”

“Hmm…”

“You know, it’s a sensitive issue to bring up origins.”

“……”

Logan was the illegitimate son of Duke Pierce. The idea of an illegitimate grandson marrying another family’s illegitimate child was unacceptable.

“Even if there were dirt in my eyes, I wouldn’t allow it.”

“……?”

“……I think that’s what he would say.”

“……Ah.”

Adam sighed. He rested his chin on his hand and pondered for a long time before lifting his head.

“Then, how about another daughter?”

“What do you mean…”

“Caroline. Although it’s been a short time since her engagement was broken, if we take some time and have a brief engagement before marriage, we could mitigate the situation.”

Logan’s expression became inscrutable as he watched Adam casually switch the daughter to be married off.

He pondered for a moment, then frowned slightly, giving a pitying smile as if looking at this begging vagrant.

“Do you always handle your children so easily?”

Adam squinted.

“They are my children, raised with my money. The rights to their marriages belong to me.”

“Is that so? But the rights to my marriage belong to me, so I must respectfully decline your proposal.”

“……Even with Caroline?”

“Yes, especially with that woman.”

Logan thought for a moment and said,

“The decision to break the engagement with Miss Cecilia hasn’t been made on my side yet.”

* * *

“I can’t understand it.”

Cecilia said, looking at the garden trees.

“Why didn’t you break the engagement immediately?”

Logan flicked the ash from the cigarette in his mouth.

“What kind of answer do you want? An honest answer? Or a hypocritical one?”

“The situation itself is surprising, so let’s hear both.”

“First, the hypocritical answer.”

He met Cecilia’s eyes and began to speak.

“I feel favorable towards you. Setting aside your background, I want to get to know you.”

Cecilia remained indifferent.

“And the honest answer?”

“Well.”

He put the cigarette in his mouth. Blowing smoke into the air, he said,

“You seem desperate to break off the engagement with me.”

“You knew…?”

“If I didn’t notice with how obvious you were, I’d be an complete moron.”

Such an ungentlemanly word came from his noble face. Cecilia was genuinely surprised. That he could say something like that.

Then, with a mischievous smile she had never seen before, he continued,

“Somehow, I didn’t want to go along with what you wanted.”

“…Why?”

Cecilia couldn’t understand. You don’t like me either.

Or perhaps, in this life…

“Do you like me?”

Logan couldn’t hold back his laughter at her question. Coughing and wiping away tears from the smoke, he answered,

“No, I’m sorry, but not at all.”

“…Then.”

“I really hate being controlled by someone, but for some reason, when you’re around, I feel like I’m being manipulated. Not just me, but everyone around you.”

“Why is that…?”

“It’s unpleasant.”

“…”

“That’s why I don’t want to be swayed by what you want.”

“…”

Cecilia looked at him in this life and thought.

She once considered him a quiet, polite but cruel man.

Correction.

He was neither quiet nor polite.

But he was still cruel.
