Irene couldn’t make heads or tails of what was happening. The only thing she clearly remembered was that, without realizing it, she had nodded in response to his request.

The next moment, her body tipped backward.

Startled, she quickly wrapped her arms around his neck to steady herself, and she thought she might have heard a low chuckle.

But contrary to her fears, she was gently laid down on the carpet.

His hand firmly cradled the back of her head, preventing her from hitting the floor.

And then, Michael covered her body with his.

Or rather, trapped her would be a more accurate description. Michael’s physique was exceptional, even among knights.

His tall frame and body, sculpted by rigorous combat, were encased in layers of hardened muscle—far too much for Irene to bear.

She should have felt overwhelmed by his weight.

ā€˜…Why doesn’t it feel heavy?’

Despite his urgency, Michael positioned himself between her legs, using one arm to support himself so that his weight didn’t crush her.

Even though he was under the influence of miasma, he hadn’t completely lost his mind—at least, not to the point of disregarding the safety of his pair.

He lowered himself quickly, bringing his face close to hers.

Before Irene could say anything, something soft pressed against her lips.

ā€œ…!ā€

There was no mistaking what it was.

His tongue had forcefully thrust into her mouth the moment their lips touched.

ā€œMm…!ā€

Surprised by the sudden kiss, Irene shook her head in resistance.

In response to her struggle, Michael lifted his face and cupped her cheeks with both hands.

Her face, held firmly in his large hands, could no longer escape. Irene’s body stiffened with tension and fear.

She had never experienced a proper kiss in her life.

The only memory she had was from the week she spent with him in her previous life, when he had kissed her frantically, and she had barely managed to endure it.

It wasn’t so much a kiss as a desperate, forceful act, almost akin to a violent struggle for survival.

Back then, his fervent kisses had left her lips swollen and her mouth’s edges torn.

That was the only type of kiss Irene remembered.

And now, Michael was attempting to repeat that.

ā€˜This… this is part of a purifier’s duty.’

Irene tried to accept it, telling herself it was necessary, but memories of that rough and painful time resurfaced, causing her body to tense up involuntarily.

She clenched her teeth, and the sound of them knocking together escaped through her slightly parted lips.

Had he noticed? Michael, who had been about to kiss her again, suddenly stopped.

Still expecting him to come closer, Irene kept her body tense, bracing herself for what was to come.

But even after a long pause, he didn’t press his lips to hers again.

Instead, the thumbs of his hands, which were cupping her cheeks, gently stroked her skin.

The tender, soothing touch seemed to calm her, and Irene slowly felt the tension in her body begin to melt away.

Her trembling gradually subsided.

ā€˜He’s going to kiss me again now…’

But Michael still didn’t move.

Yet she could feel his gaze intensely fixed on her, even with her eyes closed.

Why wasn’t he moving?

Unable to bear the waiting any longer, she opened her eyes. His still crimson eyes were watching her.

Gulp.

The new tension was different from before, and Irene swallowed dryly.

ā€œAre you… feeling better? There’s still miasma left though…ā€

How was he managing to maintain his composure in this state?

It couldn’t simply be because he was a paladin. If that were the case, he would have been just as calm in their past life.

But back then, he had frantically buried himself between her legs, as if he were going to devour her. He had bitten her everywhere, so fiercely that her lips and chest had been swollen and bruised to the point where wearing clothes was painful.

So why wasn’t he behaving like that now? Why was he so composed?

ā€œDo I… seem fine to you?ā€

His reply to her question was strangely filled with frustration, as though he found the situation hopeless.
