I Wish You Well In Your Next Love, My Love - Chapter 41
A jewel of an elaborate design was set at the center, and the silver threads sparkled like starlight. Depending on the angle, the color of the gem looked different.
I lowered my gaze slightly to check the price and swallowed a startled breath.
“W-What kind of necklace costs 2,000 crowns?”
It was an astronomical amount, enough to buy and still have money left after purchasing twenty thousand loaves of rye bread.
Luxurious accessories that normally wouldn’t be hung in a shop window were displayed to target the festival period.
After all, there was nothing easier than emptying the pockets of people intoxicated by the illusion of a special day.
The fact that the owner of the pocket was a first-rank Awakened didn’t make any difference.
About nine years ago, on the day that marked exactly one hundred days since we started dating, he gave me a ring shaped similar to the necklace in the display window.
Back then, gems that changed color depending on the angle were even rarer, so it must have been worth far more than the current price.
“…He said he bought it for one hundred crowns.”
Even one hundred crowns was a huge sum, almost equal to my half-year living expenses, so it was by no means a small amount.
I remember scolding him back then, asking why he bought something so expensive. Gerard must have lowered the price a lot because he didn’t want to get scolded.
Even so, when I said something about it, he must have been quite flustered.
At the time I heard the price, I was so shocked that I immediately got angry, but in truth I was happy.
It made my heart flutter because it felt like Gerard and I had become something more special. I also liked that when he went out to the field, I could look at the ring and think of him.
Even though my voice kept rising, I clearly remember the corners of my lips twitching upward.
“Are you angry or are you smiling. Pick one.”
“I don’t know. My mood feels weird.”
“If you’re this happy over just one ring, how much more are you planning to like me later.”
“So annoying. I’m going to wear it every day, so you don’t wear yours.”
“Why. A couple ring is called a couple ring for a reason.”
“Anyway, no.”
The old memory that suddenly surfaced made the area around my chest tickle. Even though it had already been several years, the back of my neck grew warm. It seemed that excitement wasn’t something that could easily be forgotten.
I decided to break up with Gerard and chose to disappear completely from his life, but I would never be able to forget him.
Thinking that I should at least keep something that would let me remember Gerard, I never got rid of his belongings.
The ring was the same. While I was soaked in those memories of the past.
“Should I buy it for you?”
At the voice that came from above my head, my body jerked in shock.
“…Lord Castion?”
Before I realized it, Gerard had come right up behind my back. When he bent down, his face brushed past the side of my own. If I turned my head, his lips would be close enough to touch my cheek.
However, Gerard paid no attention to me and only quietly stared at the necklace in the display window.
“It would suit you.”
Warm fingertips touched the back of my neck. My shoulders instantly stiffened in surprise. With an absent-minded touch, Gerard straightened the wrinkled collar of my clothes.
While I stood frozen, Gerard straightened his body and was already about to stride into the shop.
“W-Wait a second! You don’t have to buy it for me!”
I hurriedly grabbed his arm with both hands and pulled.
Thud.
The notebook I had been holding fell to the ground. At the faint sound, Gerard lowered his gaze and personally bent down to pick it up.
If he picked it up, he should have returned it to the owner right away, but instead he scanned through the notebook where he stood.
“A fruit stall part-time job?”
Gerard’s handsome brows drew together.
“Please give it back.”
When I held out my hand, he obediently placed the notebook on my palm.
“You’re going to do a part-time job?”
