I Wish You Well In Your Next Love, My Love - Chapter 49
âHuh?â
Without even asking the carriage ownerâs opinion, Gerard opened the door. His face, jerking his chin toward the inside, was full of stubbornness.
Even if I resisted here and said I wouldnât go, it would only waste time.
I glanced back slightly at the man behind us. Was it really okay for me to ride.
âDo you like him?â
Suddenly a large hand wrapped around my shoulder. Gerard pressed his lips right beside my ear and whispered.
âWhat are you talking about.â
âWhy were you looking at him.â
âBecause heâs the owner of the carriageâŚâ
âThat guy has a history with a number of women. Donât get too attached.â
With that, his hand lightly pushed my back, and in the end I climbed into the carriage.
Gerard sat beside me, and the man took the seat across from us.
âAllow me to introduce myself, though itâs late. I am Alvar Luge of the Melvers Temple.â
The Melvers Temple was where the Awakened were affiliated.
âIâm Louize Harper, a Purifier trainee.â
Alvarâs astonished eyes darted back and forth.
He glanced once at his superior, then quickly shifted his gaze back to me before their eyes could meet. Then he stared at the back of my neck in a way that felt awkward.
âŚDid I get something on me since I left without showering this morning? I rubbed the back of my neck with the back of my hand.
âMiss Harper, itâs cold outside. Wouldnât it be better if you put on a coat? There happens to be a suitable one in the carriageâŚâ
Alvar rummaged through the rack beneath the seat and pulled out a light coat.
It was a little chilly, but not enough to need another layer, so I was about to politely refuse, when Gerard snatched the coat midway.
âDonât bother talking to her. She probably doesnât even have the strength to answer right now.â
Without warning, Gerardâs hand covered my eyes. My head was pushed back until the back of it rested against the soft backrest.
âYou must be exhausted because of me last night, so get some sleep until we arrive.â
âCough.â
The moment my eyes closed, exhaustion rushed over me.
The soft seat, the gentle rocking of the carriage, and the comfort of the hand lightly resting over my face pulled me toward sleep.
* * *
The previous night.
Alvar had suffered through a terrible nightmare, but it was fine.
âWhat did you dream about again.â
At the gentle hand brushing back his hair, Alvar whined.
âI dreamed that a snake as big as a house crushed my body.â
âYou should have asked it to spare you.â
âI did. But it was too busy staring at the fish in the pond and didnât listen to a word I said.â
Rona burst into laughter. If he could make her laugh, Alvar could have nightmares like that for the rest of his life.
âStill, you should be careful today. Every time you have a nightmare, something bad happens.â
At the words worrying about him, Alvar felt a surge of emotion. Dating Rona had really been the right choice. It was the best thing that had happened to him this year.
She was the new girlfriend he met just one week after breaking up with his ex.
When he had been struggling with the pain of the breakup, the angel who came to him was Rona.
Alvar kissed Rona and said,
âWhat bad thing could happen, other than the commander scolding me?â
âThe commander, you mean Lord Castion?â
At the mention of Gerard, Ronaâs eyes sparkled.
âCan you take me to the Melvers Temple?â
Alvar was deeply moved.
The thought that she wanted to spend the entire day with him made his heart swell.
If his lovely lover wanted something, Alvar wanted to grant her anything.
Besides, today was the day he was going out for field inspection anyway.
There were hundreds of temples under Melvers spread throughout the empire.
Gerard, the highest-ranked Awakened of Melvers and its commander-in-chief, personally visited the locations where the most battles had occurred that year or where massive damage had been suffered, conducting on-site inspections himself.
