Chapter 51
Though Alvarās mind kept denying it as something that absolutely couldnāt be true, the Gerard before his eyes looked more than capable of doing exactly that.
That pitiful Purifier didnāt even know what state she was in, and was only struggling ceaselessly against the sleep rushing over her.
Unable to keep watching, Alvar pulled out clothes he had prepared in his carriage by size and by material, for the sake of a future girlfriend who might one day ride in it.
Among them, he handed the smallest one to Louize, but before it could even touch her, Gerard snatched it away.
āGet some sleep until we arrive.ā
He even went so far as to cover her face from his view, as if telling him to mind his own business.
For an instant, Alvar felt wronged.
No matter how much he kept open the possibility of every woman in the world, his burning heart currently held only a single woman.
The owner of Alvarās heart was Rona.
In other words, handing Louize the clothes had been a kindness containing no impure intention at all.
Even with a look on her face like she was dying of discomfort, once Gerard closed her eyes for her, Louize couldnāt even resist and simply nodded off, her head drooping to the side.
Just how exhausting and intense a night had they spent⦠Alvar cut off his own thoughts, wanting to block the imagination that was about to grow and grow.
Once Louize fell asleep, a strange silence settled over them.
Other than the rattling vibration of the carriage and the sound of Louizeās soft breathing, nothing could be heard.
Instinctively, Alvar kept his mouth shut. It was because he felt an animal-like sense of danger telling him that he must not wake that womanās peaceful sleep.
At that moment, Gerard crooked a finger at Alvar.
In that brief instant of about one second, Alvar exerted tremendous concentration and quickly judged what it was his superior wanted.
Drool was running from the slightly parted corner of Louizeās mouth.
Alvar hurriedly took out a handkerchief from his inner pocket and handed it over.
āPhew. That was the right answer.ā
The sight of Gerard receiving the handkerchief and carefully wiping the corner of her mouth felt so unreal that it was like looking at a creature from a fantasy.
Even after wiping her mouth, his superior didnāt stop kneading the womanās hand.
It even began to feel ambiguous whether it was for that Purifierās sake, or whether he was doing it because he wanted to touch her himself.
At last, the carriage arrived in front of the temple, and the Purifier got out after carefully putting on the coat.
āWhat time do you finish? Iāll come pick you up.ā
āAh, please.ā
āAm I always like this? Itās because it feels like you being feeling is my fault.ā
āIām the one who drank, and Iām also the one who first offered to purify you.ā
āIām the one who insisted on getting food, and Iām the one who didnāt refuse the purification.ā
āAfter training today, Iām supposed to go to a job interview for part-time work.ā
āDo you really have to do that?ā
āI need to earn as much as I can around Foundation Day.ā
Gerard was just about to add something right away, when someone called from behind, āLouize?ā Louize visibly panicked, then after saying only, āThank you for today,ā she quickly shut the carriage door.
Even after Louize had gone all the way up the temple steps, the carriage remained there for quite a while.
Waiting for his superiorās orders, Alvar cautiously watched Gerard, who was sitting across from him, then lightly knocked on the carriage wall. Only then did the coachmanās sharp cry ring out, and the carriage slowly started moving.
āUm⦠Commander.ā
Gerard looked at Alvar across from him with only his eyes moving.
āWhat about the Celovia field inspection?ā
āIām going.ā
āI think they believe youāve already departedā¦ā
āTell them to wait a few more days.ā
āYes, sir.ā
With Gerard Castionās visit approaching, the Melvers Temple in Celovia had probably already finished a thorough cleaning, as if they were turning the temple upside down. They would be waiting for Lord Castion after aligning and readjusting everything so that nothing might offend his eye, their discipline wound tight.
Gerard had absolutely no idea what the people waiting for him were feeling.
He had no need to know, either.
Even if Gerard were to skip the inspection, at most there would only be a few disappointed complaints behind his back, because no one would dare rebuke him.
