I carefully gripped the pen.

What she wanted was a short letter announcing our breakup.

“What are you doing! Hurry up and write!”

A blue blade was barely touching my neck. With my hand damp with sweat, I wrote down what she demanded, one character at a time.

[ Gerard,

I’m sorry. I think this is as far as our relationship should go.

For both our sakes, let’s end it here.

Don’t ever look for me again. ]

Click. The moment I set the pen down, a cold voice flew at me.

“Check it.”

“It was written exactly as you said, Madam.”

When Marcella nodded, the guard folded my letter precisely in half and slipped it into the inner pocket of his clothes.

“…Then I’ll be going now.”

When I tried to rise from where I had been kneeling, a rough hand seized my arm. It was not to help me up. Flustered, I looked at Madam Marcella.

Her red lips, wearing a faint smile, slowly opened.

“Give her a room. Watch her so she cannot kill herself.”

Wasn’t she going to let me go if I only wrote the letter?

I shouted urgently.

“What?! Wait, hold on! How can you do this? I did everything you told me to!”

Despite my struggle, Madam Marcella merely crossed her legs and cast me a dry gaze.

I realized it.

That my method had been completely wrong. The person before me was not someone I could coax by simply currying favor with her appropriately.

“It hurts my heart the most when I have to break the fantasies of stupid things like that.”

From the laughter-laced voice, I felt her cruelty. The particles of air scraping painfully against my skin as if sharpened were not simply a matter of my own mind.

This space remembered.

Its master’s cruelty.

I had to prepare myself for everything that would happen to me afterward.

Whether because of the cold or because I had swallowed down fear, even as my teeth clattered together, I racked my brain over how I could get to Gerard.

‘Why is she trying to keep me alive and locked up?’

Before long, a thought flashed through my mind.

To her, Gerard was no different from a goose that laid golden eggs.

For such a son to plan an escape with some commoner woman must have been a shocking matter even to Marcella, who had gone through all sorts of storms.

A sense of crisis that she could no longer control her son.

But Gerard’s deviation from the track was not solely because of me. It was something that would inevitably happen one day.

A troublesome matter that had to be gone through at least once.

And I, who had appeared in the midst of this, was a weakness that would let her seize her son’s reins again.

If breaking things off with me did not make him pull himself together, she intended to threaten Gerard with my very existence.

She was a woman who would use even a single card in her hand until it had worn down completely.

“…I.”

The moment I realized it, something inside me crumbled away.

The cold seeping into my bones was no longer important.

I had thought I had nothing to fear because I had nothing to lose. Even that had been my mistake.

Because I held nothing, I couldn’t protect Gerard, much less myself, and in the end, the very existence of me had become his shackles.

My position and station, which I had forgotten all this time, rushed over me all at once.

“…Gerard.”

I don’t want to become your leash.

Gritting my teeth, I struggled.

“Ugh!”

When my elbow struck him squarely in the nose, the sturdy man swallowed a short scream and bent his waist with a flinch.

Not missing that chance, I quickly slipped out of his grasp.

I ran with all my strength toward the nearest window, but my wet, worn shoes slipped, and my body staggered. Still, I stubbornly put strength into my toes, held on, and grabbed the window.

“Haa.”

This place was on the second floor.

I knew that jumping down recklessly with my bare body was a reckless thing to do. But now was not the time to be picky about cold water or hot water before moving. Escaping this place somehow came first.

It was when I had half leaned my upper body outside, into the pouring rain.
