Nina twisted her lips into a sneer.

“You’re overly concerned with other people’s affairs. Stop your disgusting talk and get out. Or should I call someone to drag you out?”

She dismissed him with a resolute firmness that shattered any remaining hope.

But he still tried to leave a lingering threat.

“…I hope you reconsider by the next time we meet.”

Without the support of the Taylor family, winning the lawsuit easily would be impossible.

“…Despicable bastard.”

Nina slumped into the sofa as soon as Count Azelot disappeared.

Feeling nauseous, she had kept herself composed to not appear weak, but now her head felt hot and dizzy.

It felt like she had stayed up thirty hours straight working on a project and then downed a bottle of soju on an empty stomach while being struck with a severe cold.

She felt so weak that she wished someone would carry her to her bedroom.

‘…My husband, but his judgment was accurate.’

Reliving this situation made everything vividly clear.

If she sided with Count Azelot, it was certain her husband would be ousted from his guardianship role.

With that persistent threat still hanging around, and a potential traitor (her past self) in the house, adopting Ian seemed like the best way to keep him safe until adulthood.

‘Anyway, I hope he heard what I said…’

No matter how much Count Azelot plotted, it would be impossible for him to take the child if she, backed by her grandfather the Chief Justice, didn’t support him.

She had no intention of siding with that bastard, so if her husband could trust her even a little, they wouldn’t need to struggle to maintain their marriage.

She hoped this incident would earn her at least a bit of her husband’s trust.

“Huu…”

As Nina lay sprawled across the sofa armrest, she heard the sound of men’s shoes approaching.

She raised her head with difficulty, still breathing heavily.

“…”

Ash was looking down at her with his cold, steely gray eyes.

If he had heard even a part of the conversation, there should have been some sign of confusion, but…

He still looked at her as if she were a bug to be crushed.

Then he walked past her without a word.

‘Did I misjudge the timing?’

Or was this not enough to shake him?

As she stared blankly at Ash’s cold, retreating figure, Melanie approached quickly.

“…Madam, are you alright?”

Ah, the shadow she glimpsed earlier at the entrance must have been Melanie’s, not her husband’s.

The maid’s brown eyes were trembling with confusion.

Seeing the reaction she had hoped for from her husband now coming from Melanie, it seemed Melanie had overheard the conversation.

“There’s no need to worry. I’m fine.”

“I’ll help you. Let’s get you to your room.”

“No, I can manage on my own. First… store that separately. It’s dangerous, so be careful not to let it get into anyone’s hands, understand?”

Just in case Count Azelot caused trouble again, she might need it.

She had to keep any potential evidence safe.

“Are you sure you’ll be alright?”

Melanie asked cautiously, and Nina nodded with a strained smile.

“I’ll leave this to you. I’ll head up now, so don’t worry about me and go about your work.”

She wanted to stay sprawled on the sofa and rest, but she felt she might fall asleep if she stayed like that, so she forced herself to get up.

“…….”

Maybe she should really go to some nice, quiet place to recuperate.

As she struggled up the stairs, Nina paused on the landing and wiped the cold sweat from her forehead with the back of her hand.

Even though she was holding onto the banister, it felt like she was sinking into a muddy swamp with each step.

Melanie’s confused gaze lingered on Nina’s back for a long time.
