“How ridiculous. You kept bringing up service regulations and codes of conduct to nitpick at me over every little thing…”

It was the seventh-year investigator whom Navian had tormented by picking at trivial matters just to establish her own authority.

Navian’s eyes rose sharply at the voice that completely discarded any notion of respect or courtesy toward a senior or colleague.

But.

“If there are not just one or two cases, then it sounds like it was habitual. Shouldn’t you at least admit what should be admitted?”

“If she were the type to admit it easily, she wouldn’t be standing there with her head held high like that.”

From the investigator who had been treated like a servant while running Navian’s errands to the newly arrived recruit who was barely out of training.

The results hadn’t even come out yet.

Yet the investigators were already acting as if she had been dismissed just because of a single complaint.

The absurdity left her speechless.

Only for a moment.

Navian spoke with a fierce glare.

“For people who work in a court, you are slandering someone like this based only on circumstantial evidence? You all lack the qualifications to be court officials.”

Although Baron Sommerden had indeed dropped a major issue before leaving, it was still only circumstantial evidence.

It had no legal validity.

“Have you forgotten that there are precedents stating that multiple pieces of concrete circumstantial evidence can constitute valid evidence?”

However, there are always exceptions to everything.

Navian swallowed dryly at the sharp remark from the seventh-year investigator and said,

“…Let me make this clear. I followed lawful procedures. There is absolutely no legal basis to punish me.”

“…A person died, and you say you followed procedure. Is that really something a human being should say?”

It wasn’t as if she had personally pushed him to his death, so why should she be blamed?

“The one who chose to take his life was himself. That isn’t my fault, is it?”

When she glared fiercely in indignation, he gave a hollow laugh as if he were at a loss for words.

Navian seized the momentum and continued her defense.

“Even if the second son of House Mollmun had received the iron mine, he wouldn’t have been able to develop it anyway. In that case, receiving money instead was far better. So I do not understand why you are blaming me.”

That was precisely why she had concealed the highly credible internal opinion.

After all, a large-scale development project wasn’t something an individual could carry out.

Rather, thanks to her, everyone had benefited.

“You spent all this time treating people like criminals, and now it turns out you’re the worst one of all, woman.”

“The worst…!”

Navian faltered at the blatant accusation and looked around.

But everyone merely nodded as if the remark was well deserved.

“…Tsk, the atmosphere is unpleasant anyway. Why don’t we all go out for a cup of tea.”

As if he had nothing more to say, he glanced around at the others.

Then the others began tidying their desks and said,

“You know the new coffeehouse that opened just up ahead? Let’s go there.”

“I came to work without even eating breakfast, so that works out well. I should buy a sandwich.”

Navian was engulfed in a humiliation she had never experienced before.

The juniors who had once received her instruction were now treating her as if she were invisible.

As she stood frozen like ice, unable to believe the reality before her, someone brushed past and lightly struck her shoulder.

“…Murderer.”

Thud.

At the chilling accusation, she lost her balance and collapsed onto the floor.

But everyone merely ignored her, sending looks filled with reproach and ridicule.

Not a single person offered her a hand.

“…Honestly, even when people said she was good at her job, I never understood it. Didn’t you all feel the same?”

“Other departments talked about it a lot too. She only had seniority, and no flexibility at all. They said working with her was exhausting.”

“Now that I think about it, it seems like the only time she showed flexibility was when it benefited her.”

The investigators burst into light laughter as they disappeared.

She had received countless complaints before.

Even so, it had always ended with a simple pay cut, and this time would surely be the same.

Then why was everyone leaving as if they would never see her again?

An ominous feeling wrapped around her ankles.
