Back then, the tent had been omitted because the handover hadn’t been properly done during the process of reorganizing the attendants.

“Since the two of them will be using the same tent, there’s no need to check that separately, but we must do everything possible to make sure she suffers no inconvenience while camping.”

“Of course.”

Marsha clenched both fists and burned with determination.

Because ensuring the Madam’s comfortable journey was the duty of her, the personal maid assigned to her.

Just then, Nina approached, pulling her coat close around herself.

“You’ve all worked hard since early morning.”

“It’s nothing at all.”

When Melanie smiled faintly, Nina patted her shoulder and said,

“It’s cold, so stop here and go inside. We’ll be away from the estate for at least a fortnight, so don’t forget to arrange leave for the maids while we’re gone.”

“I will do so, as long as it doesn’t make the management of the estate lax.”

“That isn’t something that applies only to the staff. It’ll soon be the new year, won’t it. You should rest too.”

Feeling the warmth in those kind words, Melanie nodded.

Whether she would actually rest, given her own nature, was questionable, but she couldn’t very well make Madam worry.

“…Wife, please get in first. I’ll check a few more things and follow after.”

“Alright.”

When Ash swiftly helped Nina into the carriage and got her out of the cold, Melanie’s smile deepened.

Because it was such a stark contrast to the past.

“…You packed enough wood braziers, I take it?”

A wood brazier was a portable heater, an indispensable item for winter camping.

At Ash’s question, Melanie nodded.

“Yes, since it was one of the items Your Grace had emphasized several times, we packed more than enough.”

That was why there were more baggage wagons than in previous years.

“Then I’ll leave the estate in your hands until we return.”

“Please go without worry.”

Ash soon climbed into the carriage.

Through the gap in the door, she could see the Madam shivering like an aspen in the cold, and the Master taking off his coat to drape it over her.

The Master and Madam, who once hadn’t suited each other at all, as though torn from paintings by different people and pasted together.

Now, as Melanie watched the two, who suited each other like a single painting, disappear through the crack in the door, she turned around.

Clap, clap!

Melanie clapped her hands and said,

“Though the two of them have departed, we must faithfully do the work entrusted to us.”

The employees of House Bayern, who had come out and worked hard since the cold dawn.

Their eyes gleamed despite the cold and the fatigue.

It had really been a long time since they had traveled with so many attendants following behind them like this.

Maybe because of that, they didn’t make as much speed as she had expected.

But even so, she couldn’t voice any complaints.

Because she had realized too late that the schedule she had originally drawn up was a poor one that hadn’t taken the season into account.

Was it because the road was slippery like ice even though it hadn’t snowed?

It took at least one and a half times longer than usual to enter the village.

Only after sunset did Nina enter the village, and she looked out the window.

The Bayern territory was relatively prosperous compared to other territories, and yet…

Was it because the season called winter was harsh on everyone?

The complexions of the people slowly passing by didn’t look good.

“……”

Nina’s gaze darkened in an instant.

It seemed to be the road leading to the slums, a grimy alleyway.

And within it, she had seen a scene that reminded her of her previous life.

‘I heard they were going to focus on providing free meals and shelters…’

Perhaps because the land was so vast, the family’s reach hadn’t extended here.

Homeless people were leaning against the wall, wrapped in outdated newspapers and discarded blankets.

Was it because she knew the agony of freezing to death better than anyone?

Nina clasped her trembling hands together and said,

“…Honey, I think we need more shelters. If they’re left like that, people will start freezing to death one after another.”

Even if they couldn’t expand the shelters immediately, if they bought up empty buildings and managed the homeless there, at least they wouldn’t lose their lives pointlessly.

“As soon as we arrive at our lodgings, I’ll send a letter to the administrator in charge at once.”

Ash, too, had seen the blind spot with his own eyes, so he accepted her opinion without objection.

But if they waited until his orders were issued, there might already be deaths from freezing.

“…Um, if we had the guard knights lodge the homeless at the inn, wouldn’t that at least put out the urgent fire?”

Nina’s voice was somewhat cautious.

She herself was also a noble, but she knew better than anyone how lightly nobles regarded the homeless.

Livestock at least became food or provided labor.

But they thought of the homeless as vermin who didn’t even pay taxes and only spoiled the appearance of the streets.

“Are you going to keep slacking off? Do you want to live like a beggar like that?”

“Don’t wanna! Hiic, uwaah!”

…Well, it wasn’t only nobles. Commoners thought the same way too.

He must be shocked at just how much she’s really changed. The old Nina would have NEVER said this.
