I hooked my arm around Jamie’s sulking shoulder.

“If by any chance something like that happens, I’ll save you.”

“You promised, alright!”

Jamie’s face lit up, as if she’d truly been worried.

“Yeah. So let’s make tonight count.”

We changed clothes in Jamie’s room, pulled on our masks, and hurried off toward Priscilla’s glass bathhouse.

***

“You were spot on, Lady Rienna. How is it this empty? Not a single guard.”

Jamie looked at me with wide, impressed eyes.

“Because there’s something to hide.”

“Then shouldn’t there be more security? More guards and tighter patrols?”

“You’ve gotta hide the fact that you’re hiding something.”

“I don’t follow,” Jamie mumbled.

It was simple. Why didn’t she get it? Tilting my head, I explained.

“If there were lots of guards around, what do you think people would assume?”

“That there’s something worth protecting.”

“Exactly. That’s why they don’t station any guards in the first place.”

“But what if it disappears?”

“That’s the key point. It won’t. They’ve hidden something no one can just walk off with.”

Even with my kind explanation, Jamie’s brows stayed tightly furrowed.

“Just follow me. You’ll understand once you see it for yourself.”

I crouched low and headed toward the glass bathhouse, brushing my hand over my pocket. The enchanted voice recorder I’d brought was still tucked safely in place.

The bathhouse was built a little ways off from Priscilla’s palace. If it were a place she loved and visited often, you’d expect it to be close by. But she’d had it built in a secluded area.

That in itself was suspicious.

It feels like she wanted to keep her distance on purpose.

The bathhouse was surrounded by thick, dense trees, so much so that from a distance, you could hardly see inside.

The trees looked like a fortress wall, guarding whatever was within.

Hiding beneath the shadow of the trees, I crept forward step by step. It almost felt like I was an undercover agent on a mission.

We reached the glass bathhouse in no time. I looked around cautiously and tried the door. As expected, it was locked.

“What do we do?”

Jamie’s voice was laced with worry. I grinned and motioned with my hand.

“You have a plan, don’t you?”

Instead of replying, I walked over to the left side of the bathhouse and crouched down. Jamie followed suit and knelt beside me.

A small window near the ground had been left wide open.

“I see they leave it open for ventilation.”

The window was small, but big enough for me to slip through. Jamie, tall and broad-shouldered for a woman, probably wouldn’t fit.

“I’ll go in and unlock the door from the inside. Wait out front.”

“I should go on a diet. If I were thinner, you wouldn’t have to crawl on the floor like this.”

“Nonsense, Jamie! I love your strong, healthy body. And what weight would you even lose? It’s all muscle!”

“Right? So I don’t have to feel bad, do I?”

Jamie gave me a playful wink and smile.

Maybe it was because we’d spent so much time together, but she really knew how to tease me now.

Still, I didn’t mind. Not even a little.

I gave her back a gentle push to send her away from the window and started squeezing myself through.

Crawling like this was what most people only experience in the military, but here I was, doing it now.

Getting into the glass bathhouse was easy enough. My clothes just got a bit dirty, that’s all.

The moment I was inside, I instinctively scanned the area.

It was eerily quiet. Not even a single chirp from an insect in the artificially maintained garden.

My spine stiffened with tension. Only now did it fully hit me that I was trespassing in Priscilla’s private domain.

If I get caught, it’s all over.

My palms were slick with sweat.

But it wasn’t like I wanted to run away. I just wanted to get this over with. Fast.

Not even bothering to stay quiet anymore, I rushed straight to the door.
