Jamie continued to gently massage Louis’s hands and feet.

I agreed with her. Moreover, this man likely hadn’t met anyone other than Priscilla.

Even if he had willingly entered here for love, over time, wouldn’t it have become frustrating and suffocating?

Yet, he couldn’t leave, because without Priscilla, he would die.

I suppose being a happy pair isn’t always blissful. So much for happily ever after.

Depending on who the other person is, life could easily fall into ruin.

“Ugh, uhh…”

Thanks to Jamie’s efforts, Louis soon regained consciousness.

“Hey, are you awake?”

I hurried over to his side, having been busy looking around the basement. Louis blinked, trying to focus his eyes.

His clear, vibrant green eyes scanned the hut before locking onto mine. His eyes widened in horror.

Louis quickly scrambled to his feet and pressed himself against the wall, moving so swiftly that he resembled a cockroach startled by the light.

“Wh-Who are you?!”

“I’m Rienna Harris. I’m the personal physician to Prince Helios, and I’m soon to be engaged to him. Also, I don’t get along with Imperial Consort Priscilla.”

Louis’s eyes narrowed as I coolly revealed my identity.

“D-Do you know who I am? Did you come here knowing who I was? No, wait. How did you find me? No one’s come looking for me in over twenty years…”

If I hadn’t read the novel, I wouldn’t have known either.

Priscilla had kept him hidden to everyone, after all. There was no way anyone could have found him.

And who would ever imagine that Priscilla, the Imperial Consort, had not the Emperor, but a secret lover. And not just a lover, but a happy pair?

“I know who you are. You’re Imperial Consort Priscilla’s happy pair.”

“……!”

“Yes?”

Louis immediately covered his mouth, trying not to shout, but Jamie, who was slow on the uptake, exclaimed first before hastily covering her own mouth.

“Louis.”

The moment I called his name, Louis froze, as if waking from a deep sleep. He trembled, his body shaking violently, before he opened his eyes wide, a brittle smile tugging at his lips as he spoke.

“What do you plan to do? Are you going to tell His Majesty?”

“No. I don’t plan on doing that.”

“What? Rienna, wait, wait just a moment!”

Jamie grabbed my hand, forcibly pulling me up. I kept my gaze fixed on Louis as I was dragged along.

Jamie cornered me against the wall of the cabin, speaking in a forceful whisper.

“The Imperial Consort was hiding a man. And not just any man — her happy pair! And you’re just going to let that slide? You need to expose this immediately!”

“If I expose it, that man will die. So will Priscilla. I didn’t come here to kill anyone. Dead people can’t be used as weapons.”

“Is this the ‘diamond hammer’ you’ve been talking about?”

Jamie shot a sidelong glance at Louis. She whispered, making sure Louis couldn’t hear, though it was a futile attempt.

Louis was too dazed to pay attention to our conversation. He scratched his face with his bony hand, and the expressions that flickered across his face were both pained and, strangely, light.

I nodded and pulled Jamie’s hand down. She sighed and continued speaking.

“If His Majesty the Emperor finds out about this, and hears that we knew about it beforehand, we’re dead too.”

I was well aware of that.

“If that happens, just say you kept quiet because of my threats. I’ll take full responsibility.”

“Don’t you value your own life?”

“I value my life too. I want to live. I’m doing this to stay alive. I don’t want to get bitten by a snake twice.”

Being witness to me narrowly escaping a death by snakebite, Jamie gritted her teeth and let me go.

I sat down in front of Louis, who rubbed his face, sighed, looked at the ceiling, and shook his head.

“I’ll be direct. I’m going to use your relationship with the Imperial Consort.”

Louis listened in silence.

“I don’t get along with Her Grace. She sees me as an eyesore.”

Louis nodded. I was intrigued by his straightforward acceptance of my words.

“Don’t you wonder why she doesn’t like me?”

I wondered what he would say.
