I smiled awkwardly and blinked, not understanding what she was saying.

She must have misunderstood my expression.

“Impressed, huh? Don’t be moved by such trivial things. And you have to remember that I’m not buying you a dress because you’re pretty. I’m only buying it because I don’t want you to embarrass me. After all, you will be one of my people during the event..”

I widened my eyes.

I wasn’t touched that she would buy me clothes. If Demyr had told me to wear something I wouldn’t be embarrassed by, I would have prepared accordingly. I had enough money for that.

Demyr looked down on my doctor’s salary, but the truth was that palace doctors, especially the Crown Prince’s physician, were paid more than most commoners could imagine.

Sometimes there are performance bonuses. I even received a reward for curing His Highness.

It was enough to buy a few fashionable dresses. So while I appreciated Demyr buying me a dress, it wasn’t to the extent that I was deeply moved by the gesture.

One of her people. I’ll be part of Demyr’s retinue.

Demyr was known for taking good care of her people. Entering her circle was difficult, but once you were in, she would quietly overlook most mistakes.

I didn’t bother correcting her misunderstanding, as it wasn’t a bad thing if it pleased her.

“You pretend not to care about dresses and jewelry, but you are still a woman. Your jaw just dropped.”

The corners of Demyr’s mouth curled upward. I didn’t bother correcting her misconception.

It can’t hurt to look good.

I didn’t mind being a bit materialistic if it made her happy.

“Choose as you like. I’ll show you a world beyond your imagination with a doctor’s salary.”

Demyr smiled confidently.

How expensive could a dress be? It would be hard to pretend to be surprised.

To match Demyr’s hyperbole, I prepared surprised act 1 and surprised act 2 all the way to the dress shop.

However, upon arriving, I realized there was no need for acting practice.

***

D’s Dress Shop.

I craned my neck to see the sign atop the four-story building.

“They say he’s the most popular designer these days.”

“Could the all these four floors be the dress sop?”  I asked, curious from the moment the dress shop sign became visible.

“That’s right.”

The response came not from Demyr, who stood in front of me, but from the left. A man with a nicely trimmed mustache approached us, dressed in a penguin-like suit.

“Welcome, Your Majesty. I’ve been expecting you. I’m Donald Alfonso.”

He held out a business card made of silver foil. Demyr glanced down at the card and called her assistant to take it instead.

“Lead the way.”

She didn’t even bother with a formal greeting.

It was then that I realized that was actually quite friendly with me compared to everyone else. Donald hurried over and opened the door to the dress shop.

“Welcome, Your Majesty!”

As soon as the door opened, a loud cheer and enthusiastic greetings echoed. The greeting was so overwhelming that it made my ears ring. People were lined up from the entrance to the stairwell, all of them wearing neatly cinched purple uniforms.

“These are our employees, Your Majesty. Everyone rushed out when they heard that the Queen was visiting.”

Donald looked proudly at his staff, confident that they would earn Demyr’s high praise.

They emptied the first-floor hall and gathered all their working staff, even if the days leading up to Priscilla’s party were the busiest they’ve ever been. Anyone would have been impressed by this level of service.

But Demyr was not just anyone. She received admiration from hundreds of people every day. For Demyr, having dozens of employees bow and greet her wasn’t anything special.

“Let’s go upstairs,” Demyr said indifferently.

By now, Donald must have realized. A spectacle on this scale wouldn’t be enough to satisfy Demyr.

Better stick to your day job.

It was difficult to win Demyr’s favor.

“Why aren’t you coming in?”

Demyr turned to look at me.

But I think I’ve won her over, haven’t I? What’s difficult for others seems to be easy for me.

That’s good, right?
