Chapter 371
Night had fallen.
There was not a single trace left of the Dragon of Oblivion from earlier that day. The sky was clear, and the bright light of the full moon poured down over the world.
Michael sat blankly on a fallen log, staring at the lake shimmering under the moonlight.
Irene spoke to Michael as he sat there like that.
âHow about going inside and getting some sleep?â
ââŚâŚâ
âYou didnât even eat dinner.â
ââŚâŚâ
But Michael, still with his back turned to her, just sat there in silence.
Irene was about to urge him again, but when she came a little closer and saw Michaelâs body flinch, she let out a sigh.
âWell, at least cover yourself with this. It gets cold at night.â
Irene tossed the blanket sheâd brought toward Michael.
But he didnât even turn his head to look at the blanket that landed beside him, only responding,
ââŚThank you.â
At the sound of his lifeless voice, Irene shook her head and went inside the house.
When she entered, Chomp-chomp stretched out from under the table, munching on an apple on the tabletop, and asked,
[Is His Majesty not coming in yet?]
âYeah, I think heâs going to stay outside until morning.â
At Ireneâs answer, Chomp-chomp simply couldnât understand Michael.
âHe used to always sleep holding Her MajestyâŚâ
Whenever Michael was home, he always fell asleep with Irene in his arms, almost without exception.
Once, when Irene had caught a cold and developed a fever, he had stripped down and gone into the sea, then come back with his body cooled off and held her close.
Thanks to that, Irene, whoâd been suffering from the fever, was able to sleep peacefully in his arms.
âAnyway, thank you, Chomp-chomp.â
Irene said as she looked at the paper on the table, and Chomp-chomp replied, sounding a little shy,
[Hehe, itâs nothing.]
What Irene was looking at was the receipt for renting the log cabin they were staying in now.
This cabin was something Michael had prepared for her without her knowing.
Since it had been a long time since theyâd left home together, it seemed Michael had planned to take her around the area before returning.
Thatâs why he had made a reservation at this spot with a great view of the lake in advance.
Irene, who had known nothing about it, realized it was getting dark while she was watching Michael, who was still deep in prayer.
Since they couldnât just stay out on the road forever, she was worrying about where they should stay when Chomp-chomp took this paper out of Michaelâs bag and handed it to her.
[When I saw you worrying at night about where to stay, I thought you should know.]
Thatâs how she found out Michael had arranged for a place to stay in advance.
At any rate, Irene had planned to head to the cabin Michael had reserved.
But the problem was Michael.
Even after finishing his prayers, he just stood there, speechless, with empty eyes as if he were nailed to the spot.
âMichael, what are you doing? Come on, letâs go.â
ââŚâŚâ
Even when she pressed him, he didnât reply.
So, in the end, Irene had to say, âIf you come with me, Iâll explain in detail what happened,â and lead him there.
All along the way, Michael walked at least ten paces behind Irene.
If she got even a little closer, he would immediately retreat further back, and seeing that, Irene pressed her hand to her forehead.
âHe wasnât even this bad at the Fortress.â
So, just in case, she tried talking to him gently, and soon she was at a loss.
âSo his memoryâs stuck at right after he became a Holy KnightâŚâ
His memories had reverted to when he had just endured the harsh training and been appointed as a Holy Knight.
In any case, since she had promised, once they arrived at the cabin, Irene sat with Michael on the porch steps and briefly explained what had happened up to now.
As she spoke, Michaelâs face grew stiffer and stiffer. Eventually, he managed to speak with difficulty.
âH-How is any of that possible? Me, the Monster King? I copied a world where artifacts donât work⌠I was searching for you⌠a-andâŚâ
Michael glanced awkwardly at Ireneâs belly, blushing deeply.
âT-That I⌠with you⌠relationsâŚâ
Michaelâs face turned crimson as he stammered.
He couldnât even bring himself to say the word âpregnantâ and just fumbled his words.
Unable to continue, Michael quickly changed the subject.
âBut being the Monster King makes no sense. Me, being served by monsters?â
âBut itâs true. Isnât that right, Chomp-chomp?â
[Yes, Your Majesty!]
When Irene called Chomp-chomp, the creature stuck out its tentacle from behind a rock, and as if to prove Ireneâs words, revealed dozens of tentacles, looking even larger than usual.
