Chapter 141
āA marriage proposal had come in.ā
But Louize Harper was nothing. If Arvina truly put her mind to it, erasing Louizeās existence from Gerardās heart wouldnāt be all that difficult.
That was why she had taken such a daring step. She wanted to win Gerardās heart back.
Arvina studied Gerardās impassive face and spoke.
āItās a family my father approves of, so I may end up marrying into it after I graduate.ā
āā¦ā¦ā
āI canāt keep postponing marriage because of my own selfish desires.ā
It was a desperate plea for him to stop her, even now. But even after she had gone this far, there wasnāt the slightest sign of agitation in Gerardās eyes. He merely looked bored.
āDonāt sacrifice your life for your family.ā
The words sounded affectionate, but when examined closely, they couldnāt have been colder.
His attitude drew a clear boundary, as though he had no intention of taking any responsibility for her marriage. He would try to dissuade her once out of courtesy, but he had no intention of actively intervening.
His dull ash-blue eyes burned with no emotion whatsoever. Arvina thought,
āWere his eyes always like this when he looked at me?ā
Her eyes began to sting, and restless emotions surged within her.
āLord Castionā¦ā
āRest here. Iāll make sure no one enters this room.ā
Gerard looked away.
He was about to separate Arvina, who was clinging to him as though they were one body, when she tightened her arms around him and shouted.
āLouize.ā
āā¦ā¦ā
For the first time, his eyes twitched.
āI saw you kissing Louize on the day of the training exercise.ā
āI thought there was a little rat lurking around. So it was you, Princess.ā
A little rat. Arvina drew in a breath at the unfamiliar expression he had used to describe her. But she couldnāt back down.
She struggled desperately to seize the opportunity that had slipped away because of her own arrogance and vanity.
āI donāt know how she approached you, but you should be careful. She goes around seducing every wealthy young master she can find by pretending to be pitiful with that pretty face of hers. She probably used me to get close to you.ā
An unreadable smile appeared on Gerardās lips. He met her gaze as though encouraging her to continue.
āHer specialty is demanding an enormous amount of money, then running away while claiming they have to break up because the manās family opposes the relationship. I know because Iāve cleaned up after her several times.ā
āI wish sheād demand some from me too. An enormous amount of money.ā
āā¦Sheāll pretend she isnāt like that at first.ā
For an instant, contempt flashed through Gerardās eyes. Even the last remnants of affection he had for her were crushed, leaving behind the gaze of a man in power looking down upon an insect.
Thump. Her heart seemed to plummet.
She had made a mistake. Arvina instinctively realized that she could never take back what she had just said.
Arvina remained frozen beneath the pouring humiliation and suffocating pressure. Just as Gerardās lips slowly began to part,
Click. Someone entered.
It was Louize.
The razor-sharp air wrapped around Gerard shattered completely. Leaving Arvina behind as though discarding her, he followed Louize.
Arvina had no choice but to realize it immediately. She had been unimaginably arrogant to think she could turn Gerardās heart back with a few words.
Afterward, Gerard lost his composure. He could barely restrain the emotions surging within him as though he had been swept into the center of a storm, and he took Louize roughly and greedily.
Knock, knock.
At the sound of knocking, he moved to the door himself instead of ordering the person to enter.
He opened it only wide enough for his own body, preventing anyone outside from seeing into the room.
