I Wish You Well In Your Next Love, My Love - Chapter 66
“And as long as I don’t run, my ankle’s fine too.”
“Don’t get any foolish ideas. Just rest while you still can.”
Thud. The mirror fell face-down onto the desk.
I straightened my bent waist and looked up at the unwelcome guest standing beside me.
“Aren’t you late?”
Dressed in uniform, he took a watch out from the inner pocket of his jacket. Without even opening the cover, he let out a low, ‘Mmh’.
“I still have time.”
At that careless answer, I scrunched up my face.
I had avoided the demerits, but I still wouldn’t be able to attend until after Foundation Day was over.
It seemed to be because of the bruises on my face.
The temple appeared to want to bury this incident as quietly as possible, and if I attended class with bruises hanging all over my face, they were probably worried that word would keep getting out.
‘Still, they said they won’t count it as an absence.’
Since it had already come to this, I thought I might as well rest properly.
My ankle had to heal quickly so I could work my part-time job on Foundation Day without trouble.
I was one thing, being both unemployed and a patient, but I had no idea why this man was so leisurely too.
“What are you going to do if you keep slacking off like this and get fired.”
“That’d be great for me.”
His lips curved in a sly smile.
Right. The one who’d regret it wouldn’t be Gerard, it would be Melvers.
I went to the wardrobe and took out a light outer layer.
“I’m going straight to the hospital, so I can’t keep entertaining your slacking anymore.”
Gerard took the clothes I had pulled out, put them back in the wardrobe, then placed a somewhat thicker cape into my hands.
“I told you I’d call a doctor.”
“It’s not like I’m bedridden. It’s fine. Save the money and get yourself a nice new house around this neighborhood instead, if you want.”
I put on the cape and securely tied my coin purse at my waist.
Every time I moved, I heard the clinking sound of metal knocking together.
When I reached the front door, Gerard came and stood close behind me as well.
“I’ll take you as far as the hospital. How about it.”
“The more I look at you, the more you really seem to like taking care of people.”
“Me?”
“Yes. Stop being so kind. I might end up falling for you all over again.”
Just as I was about to open the door, I suddenly turned around.
“……”
I had said it as a joke, expecting him to look disgusted or flustered, but his expression was… so unexpected that I froze.
He looked like he had been ambushed.
It seemed he had never even imagined the possibility that I might feel something for him.
I had said it half-jokingly myself, but I had also meant it as a warning for him to be a little more careful.
“Ah, anyway, I’m telling you to be careful. Before I really do fall for you and start clinging to you.”
Why was he taking this so seriously on his own?
Lost in thought, Gerard slowly brushed at the corner of my mouth.
“I don’t think that’ll happen.”
“If I fall in love, I get really pathetic and persistent. If you don’t accept my feelings, I might go around spreading rumors that you flirted with your lover’s friend, Lord Castion.”
Only then did Gerard laugh a little, as if he found it absurd.
“Go ahead.”
Was it because he knew I’d be the only one who’d end up looking strange if such a rumor spread? I couldn’t sense even the slightest feeling of danger from him.
I narrowed my eyes and glared at Gerard, then soon looked away.
When I opened the front door, sunlight, just freed from behind the clouds, poured down over my head.
My feet slowed in front of the metal stairs.
Walking on flat ground was fine, but going down stairs was still a little difficult.
Instead of stubbornly carrying me like he often did, Gerard held out his right arm.
“Hold on.”
Come to think of it, it felt like there had been less physical contact these past few days.
“Excuse me.”
With his support, I made it safely down the metal stairs.
Despite my protests, he and I went out onto the street and got into the same hired carriage. The destination, of course, was the hospital, not Melvers.
