Gerard, who had a personal physician and received all his care through the temple, looked appalled at the endless line of patients.

“I told you, let’s call a doctor.”

“The weather’s cool, so it’s not too bad to wait.”

“It doesn’t even look like there’s anywhere to sit.”

He clicked his tongue briefly, then drew his head back from the window. With his arms crossed and a frown between his brows, he looked like he was trying to think of some way to coax me into going to the temple.

“I’ll get off here now.”

If he opened his mouth, I would be helplessly swept along, so I had to strike first.

“You’re going to stand and wait in line with that leg, for a turn that might not come for who knows how long?”

“That’s what everyone here does.”

“I’m telling you not to do that.”

“……”

Again.

He was doing this again.

Standing in front of him, my emotions always surged ahead of my thoughts, and I lost the words I wanted to say.

He wasn’t the kind of person who spoke or acted while taking others’ circumstances into account at every turn.

I knew that the many grim rumors surrounding Gerard were not all baseless.

And if a man like that was tending my injuries, and worrying about my exhaustion before I did, then I…

“Ah, seriously.”

“……”

“Don’t make me get the wrong idea.”

I said it with a playful smile.

After stirring up someone else’s heart like a storm, Gerard’s face remained utterly dry.

Only the slight narrowing between his brows showed a mild displeasure.

I know he didn’t mean much by it.

I know he was only acting that way because he hated seeing me mope over something simple that could be resolved with a single word from me.

But I was the sort of person who wanted to lie down wherever there was a place, and lean wherever there was something sturdy to support me, so I would grow used once again to his causeless kindness and consideration.

I needed to be wary of the comfort he offered.

I made a point of loudly preparing to get out of the carriage. It was my way of saying that I had made up my mind, so he shouldn’t stop me.

Perhaps Gerard didn’t want to drag this out either, because he let me be.

Even as I got down from the carriage with the driver’s help, Gerard still looked displeased.

But only up to that point.

“Thank you for bringing me. Then, please be safe on your way.”

“Yeah, yeah. I’m not going to stop you, so hurry on.”

His voice was curt, but somehow it also seemed to carry a trace of hurt.

That Gerard would feel hurt because of me.

This too was surely nothing but a ridiculous misunderstanding.

I smiled and shut the carriage door myself.

I had wanted to see him off until the carriage fully left the hospital, but the line in front of the hospital kept getting longer and longer, so I had to move first.

“Alright! The registration line is on the right! Only one proxy registration per person!”

A girl with her hair braided into two plaits was shouting at the top of her lungs.

I found myself thinking she had it hard, working from early in the morning.

There was still a long time left before the day would end, so surely someone would come relieve her, right?

There was nothing more pointless than worrying about a complete stranger, yet I kept doing exactly that as I killed time.

‘Will it be my turn if I wait about two hours?’

A low shadow had settled over the gray brick building.

I pressed myself into the shade as much as I could and leaned my back against the wall.

Just then, a clever-looking boy carrying a brown bag stuffed with bundles of newspapers began hawking them to the people waiting in line.

People worn down by boredom all started pulling out coins and buying newspapers one by one.

I was just untying the coin purse fastened at my waist, thinking I might buy one too, when,

“Excuse me.”

Had the newspaper boy already made it all the way to me?

I lifted my head reflexively at the voice calling out.

But the one standing in front of me was the braided-haired girl.

“Miss, come this way.”
